What causes limited ads on a YouTube video?

The advertiser-friendly guidelines apply to every part of a video, including the title and thumbnail. They cover inappropriate language, violence, adult content, shocking content, harmful acts, hateful content, drugs, firearms, controversial issues, sensitive events, dishonest behaviour, content unsuitable for kids, incendiary content and tobacco. Some examples from the guidelines:

  • Graphic game violence in the thumbnail or the first seven seconds is treated as no ad earnings.
  • Strong profanity in a title or thumbnail can reduce earnings; occasional profanity in music or background audio usually doesn't.
  • A sexualised title or thumbnail can make a video unsuitable even if the video itself isn't.
  • Graphic images of controversial issues in a thumbnail can lead to limited ads.

How do YouTube reviewers decide?

A policy specialist looks at the video, title, thumbnail, description and tags together, weighing context, focus, tone, realism and graphicness. Context matters most: is the video there to inform and educate, or to shock? So say what the video is for in its title, description and tags.

YouTube is also testing automatic extra reviews, which may be done by a person, for videos first rated Limited or No ad earnings. Most finish within hours and can take up to 24 hours. Newly uploaded private videos are reviewed too, so you can resolve checks before you publish. You can still appeal afterwards.
