YouTube doesn't review a restriction you set yourself. When uploading:

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. Click Create, then Upload videos.
  3. Enter the details and the Audience setting.
  4. Click Age restriction (advanced), then select Yes, restrict my videos to viewers over 18.
  5. Finish the upload.
  • For an uploaded video: on your Videos page, tick the video, click Edit, then Audience, then Age restriction (advanced), and select the same option.
  • For a live stream: click Create, then Go live, and set it in the same place.
  • Don't age-restrict a video you plan to use as an ad. That gets the ad permanently disapproved.

Why is my video age-restricted when I didn't set it?

A few ways it happens:

  • YouTube applied it. When YouTube decides a video should be restricted, the restriction is permanent even if you had also set one yourself.
  • It came from a strike appeal. If YouTube finds removed content followed the guidelines but isn't suitable for all audiences, it reinstates it with an age restriction, which also hides it from people using Restricted Mode.
  • A title, thumbnail or description triggered it. The policy covers metadata, not just the video.
