Who can A/B test on YouTube?
The feature has a few conditions:
- It works only on a computer, in YouTube Studio.
- Your channel needs advanced features turned on.
- Shorts, scheduled live streams and Premieres can't be tested. A Premiere becomes testable once it ends and turns into a standard video; live archives can be tested.
- Videos that are made for kids, made for mature audiences or private can't be tested.
- Uploading 18+ content to the tool without marking it age-restricted loses you access to the feature.

How do you set up a title or thumbnail test?
Start from a new upload or an existing video:
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- For a new video, click Create, then Upload videos. For an existing one, click Content, then the video.
- In the Title box or under Thumbnail, click A/B Testing.
- Choose Title only, Thumbnail only, or Title and thumbnail.
- Add up to 3 titles or thumbnails.
- Click Done.
- Changing the title or thumbnail while the test runs stops it, and you have to start again.
- A small share of viewers may see only your default version; YouTube leaves them out of the results.

How does YouTube choose the winner?
YouTube picks the winner by watch time share, not click-through rate. All versions run at the same time. Results show on the video's Details page or under Analytics, Reach.
- To check or stop a test, open the video, click Analytics, then the Reach tab, and under How your A/B test is going click Manage test.
| Result | What it means | What viewers see next |
|---|---|---|
| Winner | One version clearly did better, with a statistically significant result | The winning version |
| Performed Same | All versions did about equally well | Pick the one you prefer |
| Inconclusive | No strong statistical difference | The first version you uploaded, which you can change |

How do you run a better test?
YouTube's own tips:
- Test older videos first, to limit the effect on your channel's views.
- Make the versions clearly different. Very similar ones can make a test run longer.
- Give the test time to finish rather than stopping early.
- Upload thumbnails of at least 1280 x 720. If any is smaller, all test thumbnails are shown at 854 x 480.

Why didn't my A/B test pick a winner?
Common reasons, and other things that go wrong:
- The differences between versions were too small to measure.
- The video didn't get enough impressions. More views make a winner more likely.
- The A/B Testing option is missing: you may be on a phone, on a Short, or advanced features aren't turned on.
- The test stopped: the title or thumbnail was changed mid-test, or the video was converted to a Short, which loses access to tests.
- A third-party tool named a different winner. Many test versions one after another and judge on click-through rate, so results can differ.

Where Zolyp fits
Testing a custom thumbnail starts with having one on every standard video. Zolyp, which publishes this guide, publishes to YouTube as one of 9 platforms (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Threads). It creates video uploads and Shorts with titles and descriptions written for search, can set a custom thumbnail on a standard video, and schedules them with the posts on your other networks. You approve the week before anything goes live.
Common questions
How many thumbnails can you test on YouTube?
Up to 3, either thumbnails alone, titles alone, or title and thumbnail pairs.
How long does a YouTube thumbnail test take?
Anywhere from a few days to two weeks, depending on impressions, how recently the video was published and other factors.
Does YouTube pick the winner by click-through rate?
No. It uses watch time share, which YouTube says supports higher-quality engagement.
Can you A/B test thumbnails on YouTube Shorts?
No. Shorts can't be tested, and a video converted to a Short loses access to its tests.
Can I A/B test on the YouTube Studio app?
No. A/B testing is only available in YouTube Studio on a computer.
