What does X treat as sensitive media?

X uses media settings to spot potentially sensitive content that people may not want to see, such as violence or nudity. By default, X shows a warning over media that may be sensitive, and you can change that at any time. X's adult content policy adds that people under 18, or who haven't added a birth date to their profile, can't click through to view marked content.

How do you see or hide sensitive media on X?

On Android: tap the navigation menu or your profile icon, then Settings and privacy, Privacy and safety, and tick the same box under Safety. On iPhone, X's help page says to adjust the setting by logging in to x.com.

  1. On x.com, click the More icon and go to the Privacy and safety settings.
  2. Find the Content you see section.
  3. Tick Display media that may contain sensitive content to see it without a warning, or untick it to keep the warning.
  4. X saves the change automatically.

How do you mark your own media as sensitive?

In the iOS app: profile icon, Settings and privacy, Privacy and safety, Your posts, then the toggle. With this on, people visiting your profile may see a message saying your account may include sensitive content and asking them to confirm. People who've chosen to see sensitive content won't see the message. X asks accounts that regularly post this kind of media to use this setting.

  1. Log in on x.com, click the More icon and select Settings and privacy.
  2. Go to Privacy and safety.
  3. Click Your posts.
  4. Tick Mark media you post as containing material that may be sensitive.

How do you add a warning to a single post?

X says one-time content warnings are available to everyone on Android, iOS and the web. For most businesses this is the right tool: mark the one post that needs it rather than putting a warning on the whole account.

  1. Attach the photo or video to your post.
  2. While editing it, tap or click the flag icon.
  3. Choose Nudity, Violence or Sensitive.
  4. Finish and send the post.

What happens if you don't mark sensitive media?

Profile and header images are stricter: X may temporarily suspend or lock the account until the image is removed, and repeat violations can mean a permanent suspension. You can appeal a suspension for graphic violence or adult content in a profile or header image.

  • If someone reports your media as sensitive, X reviews it
  • If it wasn't marked when uploaded, X may label it, or remove it entirely if it's live video
  • X may also switch on Mark media you post as containing material that may be sensitive and add a label to your account
  • You can switch the setting back, but media X has labelled stays marked
  • After repeated mislabelling, X may label the account or turn the setting on permanently
  • X may also use automated methods to detect and label sensitive media and accounts

Why is your post or account marked sensitive?

  • Your media was reported and X added a label after review
  • The account setting was switched on by you or by X. Check Privacy and safety, Your posts
  • X's automated detection labelled it
  • You can't open someone else's marked post: your Display media setting is off, or you're under 18 or have no birth date on your profile
  • To flag someone else's unmarked media: open the post's menu, select Report post, then It displays a sensitive image. X says a report doesn't automatically add a warning or remove the media
