Locked, limited or suspended: what's the difference?
| Status | What it means | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Locked | X saw suspicious or automated behaviour, or thinks the account may be compromised | Verify by phone, email or captcha, or change your password |
| Limited | Some features are restricted for a set time, for example only followers see your activity | Wait out the countdown, or verify your phone or email if offered |
| Suspended | X believes the account is spam or fake, at security risk, or broke its rules on abuse | Follow any unsuspend prompts, or file an appeal |

How do you unlock a locked X account?
To verify by email instead, select Send email after Start, then enter the code from X's email and select Verify. For a captcha check, select Start, wait while it runs in the background, then select Continue to X. If X's email doesn't arrive, check your spam, junk and social folders. While the account is locked, people visiting your profile may see a warning about unusual activity.
- Log in to your account. If you can't log in at all, contact X's support team.
- Look for the message saying your account has been locked, and select Start.
- Enter your phone number. X will associate this number with your account.
- Enter the code X sends by text message or phone call, then select Submit.

What does it mean when your X account is limited?
For aggressive following or engaging, X gives two choices: use X in a limited state for the time shown, or verify your phone or email. If you choose to wait, select Continue to X to start the countdown; you won't be offered verification again. For a possible rules violation, select Start and do what X asks, such as verifying your email, adding a phone number or deleting posts that break the rules. X says repeat violations can lead to permanent suspension.
- Only your followers may see your activity, including posts, likes and reposts
- Your account and posts may be filtered out of search results and notifications
- You may only be able to post from a desktop browser, not the app
- If X thinks you broke the X Rules, you can browse but can only send Direct Messages to followers, and can't post, repost or like

How do you appeal an X suspension?
X says most suspensions are for spam or fake accounts, accounts whose security is at risk, or abusive behaviour such as threats or impersonation, and that real accounts are sometimes suspended by mistake. A suspended account has to appeal before it can be deactivated, and can still request a copy of its personal information.
- Log in to the suspended account.
- If X asks for your phone number or to confirm your email, follow the instructions. That can be enough to unsuspend it.
- If not, and you think X made a mistake, open a new browser tab while still logged in and file an appeal from X's Help Center.

How do you avoid being locked or limited again?
- Keep the email address and phone number on your account up to date. X says you'll need them to restore access
- Don't follow and unfollow lots of accounts in a short time, or like and repost aggressively
- Don't post identical or nearly identical posts again and again, or post and delete the same content
- Don't add lots of unrelated hashtags or reply to posts with off-topic promotion
- Only connect third-party apps you trust. X says you're responsible for apps you authorise
- Running several accounts is allowed (X's limit is ten, for different purposes), but don't post the same content across them

What if none of this works?
- No access to the account's phone or email: contact X's support team. X says sometimes the only option is to create a new account
- Locked out while setting up a new account: contact X's support team
- You can post on the web but not in the app: limited accounts may only be able to post from desktop
- Locked or limited in error: X says you can appeal by contacting its support team
- Your account was hacked: change your password and follow X's compromised account steps first

Common questions
How long does an X account stay limited?
X says for a specified time that varies with the violation. The time is shown in the message you see when you log in.
Can I unlock my X account without a phone number?
Often, yes. Depending on the message you see, X offers email or captcha verification as well as phone. If you've lost access to both your phone and email, contact X's support team.
Why was my X account suspended?
X says most suspended accounts are spam or fake, but it also suspends accounts that may be hacked and accounts reported for abuse, such as threats or impersonation. Log in and appeal if you think it's a mistake.
Can I deactivate a suspended X account?
Only after appealing. X says you need to file an appeal first, then submit a deactivation request if you still need one.
What do visitors see when my X account is locked?
X says they may see a message that the account has shown unusual activity, asking them to confirm they still want to view it.
