What is the main difference between Threads and X?
Both are text-first apps for public conversation, with a For You style feed and a Following feed. The differences are in the details: how long a post can be, what you get without paying, and how each connects to other apps.
Threads is part of Meta's family, so a profile is created from an Instagram or Facebook account and ads run through Meta's ad tools. X is a separate service, and several of its posting features sit in its paid subscriptions.

How do posting and editing compare?
On Threads, every account gets 500 characters, a text attachment of up to 10,000 characters, up to 20 photos or videos in a carousel, and a 15-minute window to fix typos in the text.
On X, a standard post is 280 characters with up to four media items. Longer posts and editing are subscription features; X's help centre also notes that longer posts can't currently be drafted or scheduled on the web. Videos run up to 140 seconds without a subscription.

How do the feeds and reach compare?
Both apps mix posts from accounts you follow with recommendations, and both let people switch to a Following feed of only the accounts they follow. Meta publishes a system card explaining what the Threads feed predicts. X explains its For you timeline on its help centre, including that replies can be ranked higher when the original author has replied or when the replier is a subscriber.
Threads has one feature X doesn't: if you turn on fediverse sharing, your posts can also appear on other servers in the fediverse, such as Mastodon.

How do analytics, messages and ads compare?
Both apps cover the basics a small business needs, in slightly different ways:
- Analytics: Threads Insights shows views, interactions, followers and link visits in the app and on the web. X says its Post Activity Dashboard is free for anyone with an ads account or who registers at analytics.x.com.
- Messages: both have direct messages. On Threads, messages from people you don't follow arrive as requests, which you can switch off.
- Ads: Threads placements are added to campaigns in Meta's ad tools, in all markets since early 2026. X runs its own ads platform.

How do accounts and getting started compare?
On Threads you sign in with an Instagram or Facebook account, and you can have one Threads profile for each. Your Threads followers are separate from your Instagram followers, but your name, picture and verified badge from Instagram carry across, and you can share Instagram posts to Threads as you publish them.
X is its own account with its own sign-up, so you start from zero followers and set up the profile separately. Its paid subscriptions add features such as longer posts, longer videos and editing, so check what your plan includes before you rely on them.

Which should a small business choose?
It depends on where your customers already are, and you don't have to pick only one. Some practical pointers:
- Already active on Instagram? Threads is the shortest step, since your profile comes from that account and posts can be shared across.
- Want longer videos or edits without paying? Threads includes both for every account.
- Is your audience already talking about your industry on X? Join that conversation there.
- Short on time? Write one idea and adapt it for each app rather than pasting the same text into both.

Posting to both without writing twice
Zolyp is our product, so weigh this section with that in mind. Zolyp publishes to Threads and X from one weekly plan, and writes each post for its platform rather than reusing the same text, so the X version fits its character limit and the Threads version reads like a conversation.
Zolyp plans the week across your content themes, writes the posts and designs the visuals against your Brand Brain (your tone, colours and rules, saved once), then schedules and publishes to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Threads. Nothing goes out until you approve it. Plans that create the posts start at $29 a month, with a 3-day free trial and no card required.
Common questions
Is Threads the same as X?
No. Both are text-first apps for public conversation, but Threads is made by Meta and linked to Instagram and Facebook, while X is a separate company with its own paid subscriptions.
Which has the longer character limit, Threads or X?
Threads, for a standard post: 500 characters against 280 on X. X subscribers can write longer posts, and Threads lets anyone attach up to 10,000 characters of text.
Can you edit posts on Threads and X?
Threads lets anyone edit a post's text within 15 minutes. X lets Premium subscribers edit within 1 hour, up to 5 times.
Do Threads and X both have a Following feed?
Yes. Both offer a recommended feed and a Following feed that shows only accounts you follow, so people can choose whether they see recommendations.
Can I use the same post on Threads and X?
You can, but it often won't fit: a 500-character Threads post is too long for a standard X post. Adapting the wording for each app works better.
