What counts as a YouTube Short now?
The rules have changed in the last two years, so check them before you plan. Since 15 October 2024, a video uploaded to a standard channel counts as a Short if it is up to three minutes long and square or vertical. To keep a video out of Shorts, use a wider aspect ratio such as 16:9.
| Rule | What YouTube says |
|---|---|
| Length | Up to 3 minutes |
| Shape | Square or vertical; uploaded Shorts must be vertical or square |
| Maximum upload resolution | 1080p |
| Title | Up to 100 characters |
| Over one minute with a copyright claim | Blocked globally until the claim is resolved |
| Music from the Shorts audio library | Most songs allowed for up to 90 seconds; some limited to 60 or 30 seconds |

What job should Shorts do for a business?
Shorts are good at reaching new people quickly. They are weaker at explaining anything complicated or building the kind of trust that leads to a big purchase. So the job of a business Short is usually to earn a moment of interest and then hand the viewer on to something that can do more: a long video, a playlist or your website.
Be careful with views when you judge Shorts. From 31 March 2025, a Shorts view counts each time a Short starts to play or replay, with no minimum watch time. YouTube calls the older measure engaged views. That means Shorts view counts will often look much bigger than your long-form numbers without meaning more customers. Compare Shorts with Shorts, and look at what happened after the view.
- Good fit: discovery, quick proof of your work, answering one simple question, showing personality.
- Poor fit on their own: detailed comparisons, pricing explanations with caveats, anything that needs a full walkthrough.
- Best pattern: a Short that asks or half-answers a question, linked to a long video that answers it fully.
| If your goal is | Shorts should | Point viewers to |
|---|---|---|
| Enquiries | Show a result or answer a quick pre-sale question | A long video on price, process or what to expect |
| Shop sales | Show the product in use in a few seconds | A product demo video or your shop link |
| Local visits | Show the place, the people and the atmosphere | Your channel, then your Google Business Profile |
| Subscribers | Run a recognisable series with the same opening line | The series playlist |

Which Short formats suit a small business?
You don't need trends or dances. These formats work for almost any business because they come from your own work, and each can be filmed in a few minutes.
- Pick two or three of these formats and repeat them, so regular viewers recognise your Shorts.
- Use the same opening words for a series, such as "Customer question of the week".
- Film several Shorts in each format in one session; the set-up is the slow part, not the recording.
- Keep a list of comment questions to answer as reply Shorts. It never runs dry.
| Format | What it looks like | Hypothetical example |
|---|---|---|
| Quick answer | One customer question, answered in under a minute | A dentist: "Is whitening safe for sensitive teeth?" |
| Before and after | The problem, then the result, with a short reveal | A cleaner shows an oven door before and after |
| Process in fast motion | A job from start to finish, sped up | A florist builds a bouquet in 40 seconds |
| Myth or fact | A common belief, then the truth | A mechanic: "Do you really need to warm up your car?" |
| Reply to a comment | Read a real question, then answer it on camera | A bakery answers "Do you do gluten-free?" |
| Behind the counter | A normal moment most customers never see | A café's first ten minutes of the day |
How do you structure a Short that people watch to the end?
Short videos lose viewers in the first seconds, so the structure matters more than the camera. YouTube's Shorts camera also has a Get feedback button that analyses a video's hook, pacing and more, which is worth a try before you post.
- Open with the payoff or the question, not a greeting or your logo. "This is what a blocked drain looks like from the inside" beats "Hi, we're Smith Plumbing."
- Show, don't describe. If you can point the camera at it, do.
- Keep to one idea. If you have three tips, make three Shorts.
- Add on-screen text for the key line, since many people watch with the sound off.
- End by pointing somewhere specific: "Full guide in the related video" or "Part two on our channel".
- Write a plain title that says what the Short is about, within the 100-character limit.

How do you link Shorts to your longer videos?
Linking is what turns Shorts views into watch time on the videos that sell. There are two built-in ways.
First, the related video setting. In YouTube Studio, open Content, click the Short, choose a related video from your channel and save. Viewers then see a clickable link below your channel handle. The linked video must be public or unlisted and follow YouTube's Community Guidelines, and the feature needs advanced feature access (our guide to verifying a YouTube channel explains how to check yours).
Second, make Shorts from your long videos. When you use Edit into a Short on one of your public long-form videos, YouTube links the Short back to the original automatically. Shorts made with the Clips and Shorts tool in YouTube Studio get the source video added as their related video too, unless the Short is private, unlisted or made for kids.

How often should a business post Shorts?
YouTube doesn't publish a recommended Shorts frequency, and posting more only helps if each Short is worth watching. A better question is how many good Shorts you can make from one filming session, because batching is what keeps a schedule alive.
Hypothetical example: a small bakery films for 90 minutes every second Monday before opening. That session produces eight Shorts: two process videos, two quick answers to questions from the counter, two behind-the-scenes moments and two product close-ups. The owner posts two a week for a month and links each one to the bakery's longer video about custom cake orders.
- Start with one or two Shorts a week and keep it up for three months before judging.
- Film in batches and schedule them in YouTube Studio.
- Check the best times for your audience in YouTube Analytics rather than copying someone else's posting time.
- Recycle what works: a quick answer that does well can become a long video, and the long video can produce more Shorts.
How do you judge whether Shorts are working?
Because Shorts views count every play, judge them on what they lead to. Check these monthly in YouTube Analytics, comparing Shorts with other Shorts rather than with long videos.
| Measure | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Subscribers gained from each Short | Whether the Short made people want more from you |
| Views of the linked long video | Whether Shorts are feeding the videos that sell |
| Comments and questions | Whether you've hit a real customer concern worth a longer answer |
| Clicks to your website | Whether Shorts viewers become visitors (use a tracked link in the related long video) |
| Engaged views | A steadier comparison between Shorts than the headline view count |

Where Zolyp fits
A note on our own product: Zolyp is an AI social media team for small businesses. It plans your calendar across platforms including YouTube, writes the post text, schedules and publishes once you approve, and sends a plain-language weekly report on what worked.
If you film a batch of Shorts, Zolyp can slot them into the same calendar as your other platforms so nothing is posted twice or forgotten.
Common questions
How long can a YouTube Short be?
Up to three minutes, as long as the video is square or vertical. Wider videos such as 16:9 count as long-form.
Do Shorts help a business channel grow?
They can bring in new viewers and subscribers, but they work best when each Short points to a longer video or a clear next step. Judge them on subscribers and clicks gained, not views.
Why are my Shorts views so much higher than my long video views?
Since 31 March 2025, a Shorts view counts every time a Short starts to play or replay, with no minimum watch time. Compare Shorts with Shorts, or use engaged views.
Can I use music in business Shorts?
Yes, but be careful. A Short over one minute with an active copyright claim is blocked. Tracks from the YouTube Audio Library don't receive a Content ID claim.
What should a small business post on YouTube Shorts?
Quick answers to customer questions, before and after reveals, sped-up processes, myth or fact videos, replies to comments and behind-the-scenes moments. Each should make one point and lead to a longer video or next step.
How do I link a Short to a longer video?
In YouTube Studio, open Content, click the Short and choose a related video from your channel. It needs advanced feature access, and the linked video must be public or unlisted.
