What are the rules for requests?
LinkedIn's help page sets out:
- You can have only one open request with each connection at a time, but there's no limit to the total you can send or receive.
- You can't change the relationship after sending. The connection has to delete the request, then you send a new one.
- Requests go in your primary profile language. To ask in another language, change your primary language first.
- The Recommendations section only appears on your profile once you've given or received at least one recommendation that isn't hidden.
- Recommendations only show on a profile if they were requested through LinkedIn and both people have profiles. An email testimonial can't be added as one.

How do you accept, hide or change a recommendation?
When someone recommends you, on desktop:
- Open Messaging and select the recommendation message.
- Follow the link in the message.
- Accept it to show it on your profile, or click the More icon beside it to ask for a revision or dismiss it.
- Accepting adds it to your profile and posts an update to your network.
- A dismissed recommendation can't be restored. The writer would have to delete theirs before you could ask again.
- You can hide or unhide one after accepting it. Recommendations are listed by date and can't be reordered.
- To change one you wrote: open your profile, click the edit icon in Recommendations, go to Given, click the More icon and select Revise recommendation. The other person reviews it again before it updates on their profile.
- Only signed-in 1st, 2nd and 3rd-degree connections see your recommendations. Your public profile shows how many people have recommended you and up to two of them.

Why can't I request or give a recommendation?
Common problems:
| Problem | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No Recommendations section on your profile | You haven't given or received one yet | Request from the connection's profile via More |
| Can't ask the same person again | You already have an open request with them | Wait for them to respond or delete it |
| Wrong relationship chosen | It can't be edited after sending | Ask them to delete the request, then send a new one |
| No Recommend option | They aren't a 1st-degree connection | Connect first |
| Dismissed one by mistake | Dismissals can't be undone | The writer deletes theirs, then you request again |

Where Zolyp fits
Zolyp, which publishes this guide, is our own product, so weigh this section with that in mind. Recommendations are personal and written by people you've worked with, so Zolyp plays no part in them. What it does is write and schedule your regular LinkedIn posts, so someone reading your recommendations also finds recent work. LinkedIn is one of the 9 platforms it publishes to (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Threads), and you approve the week before anything goes live. Plans that create the posts start at $29 a month, with a 3-day free trial.
