What fits in an Instagram business profile?

Your bio is one part of a small set of profile tools. Knowing what each one does stops you cramming everything into 150 characters.

A four-part bio formula

Instagram's creator team suggests using relevant keywords in your bio so people can find you through search. The formula below builds those keywords in naturally.

  1. What you do, in the words customers use: "Wedding flowers", not "Floral artistry".
  2. For whom or where: "in Bristol", "for busy parents", "for first-time buyers".
  3. Proof or difference: one specific fact, such as "Same-day delivery", "Family-run since 1998" or "Gluten-free kitchen". Only claim what's true.
  4. One call to action: "Book below", "Order by 2pm", "DM for a quote".
  • Before: "Passionate about creating beautiful moments. Living our dream."
  • After (hypothetical): "Wedding and event flowers in Bristol. Family-run since 1998. Check dates and book below."
  • Common mistake: a bio that describes your passion rather than your service. Visitors want to know what you do for them.
  • Common mistake: three calls to action. Pick the one that matters most and let links and highlights cover the rest.
  • Common mistake: no place name for a local business. People search with place names, and a bio that names your area tells local visitors you serve them.
  • Common mistake: claims you can't back up, such as "best in town". A specific, true fact is more convincing.

Bio examples for local services (1 to 8)

All examples are hypothetical. Swap in your own town, facts and action; never claim awards or numbers you can't back up.

Finish the profile: links, button and highlights

Your bio's call to action needs somewhere to send people. Add up to five websites under Links in Edit profile, and put the one that matches your call to action first. If you use a supported booking or ordering partner, a business profile can also show one action button, such as Book now, Reserve or Order food.

Then use highlights for everything that won't fit: prices, reviews, how to order, delivery areas and opening hours. Stories you add to a highlight stay visible on your profile until you remove them. Finally, set up to four chat FAQs, with optional automated answers, so people who message you get an instant reply to common questions.

  • Read your bio aloud. If it sounds like an advert, rewrite it the way you'd say it to a customer.
  • Update it when something changes: seasonal hours, a new service, a booking link.
  • Check every link monthly. A broken link wastes the visit you worked to earn.
  • Match the bio to your posts. If your bio promises weekly tips, post them weekly; a visitor who scrolls and finds none won't follow.

Where Zolyp fits (disclosed: it's our product)

A sharp bio only helps if the posts behind it deliver what it promises. Zolyp, which we make, keeps your services, audience and tone in its Brand Brain, so every caption and visual it writes and designs matches what your bio says you do. It publishes to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Threads, and nothing goes live until you approve it. Lite is $9 a month per brand if you only want to schedule posts you make yourself; the plans that create posts start at $29 a month, with a 3-day free trial.

Common questions

How long can an Instagram bio be?

Up to 150 characters, according to Instagram's help centre. Anyone can see it.

What should I put in my Instagram business bio?

What you do, who it's for or where, one reason to choose you and one action. Use the words customers would type into search.

How many links can I add to my Instagram profile?

Up to five websites, added from Edit profile under Links. Put the most important one first.

Should I use emojis in my Instagram bio?

A few can help break up the text, but they use up characters. Make sure the bio still reads clearly without them.

Can I add a booking button to Instagram?

Business profiles can show one action button at a time, such as Book now, Reserve or Order food, if you have an account with a supported partner.

How often should I change my Instagram bio?

Whenever something customers need to know changes, such as hours, services or your main link. Otherwise, review it every few months.
