How to unfollow accounts and remove followers on X (Twitter)

From the account's profile, on any device:

1. Go to the profile of the account you want to unfollow.
2. Tap the Following button. On x.com, hover over it until it changes to Unfollow, then click.
3. Confirm when X asks.

• From a post in the app: tap the More icon at the top of the post, then Unfollow
• From a post on x.com: hover over the account's name, then click the Following button
• From your following list: open Following on your profile and tap or click the Following button next to the account, then confirm

X says this is currently available on the web only. A removed follower can follow you again if your posts are public, or send a new follow request if they're protected. To stop that, block the account instead.

1. On x.com, open your followers list.
2. Find the account and click the More icon to the right of its Follow button. Or go to the account's profile and click the More icon there.
3. Click Remove this follower.
4. Click Remove to confirm.

Most business accounts stay public: X says protected posts don't appear in search engine results. Use Remove this follower for the odd unwanted account, and block for persistent problems.

X's rules also ban follow churn (following and unfollowing large numbers of accounts to inflate your own count), following or unfollowing lots of unrelated accounts in a short time, copying another account's followers, and using services that claim to add followers. Breaking them can get the account suspended.

• Up to 400 accounts per day, on every X account
• Once you follow 5,000 accounts, you may need more followers before you can follow more. The ratio is worked out for each account
• There's no overall cap on following, only on how fast you do it

• "You are unable to follow more people at this time": you've hit the daily limit (wait a day), followed too quickly (try again in an hour or so) or hit the ratio limit (unfollow a few accounts or wait for more followers)
• Your account is locked or limited, which restricts following
• The account has protected posts, so your follow is a request until they approve it. Cancel appears where the Follow button was
• You get an error when you tap Follow: the account may have blocked you
• The Unfollow button doesn't respond on the web: refresh the page, or unfollow from the account's profile
• Your follower count dropped: X removes locked accounts from follower counts, and people may have unfollowed or deactivated. Spam accounts can be hidden by the quality filter in your notifications settings
