What are communities on Threads?
Communities are public spaces built around a topic. They grow from popular topic tags: once enough people use a tag, it can become an official community after a review. An active community's tag turns blue with its own icon, shows who's a member and who's online, and swaps the like button for a custom emoji.
Meta's two pages describe the stage differently. The help centre still calls communities a beta tested across more than 200 popular topics. Meta's June 2026 newsroom post says communities are graduating out of beta and adds a Communities Hub to the main menu.

How do you find and join a community?
Posts shared to a community show Community next to its name, for example Book Threads.
- Tap a community name on a post, or search for it.
- Check the community page: members, who's online, and a feed of its posts.
- Tap Join in the top right.
- Open your communities any time from Menu in the top left.
- Others can see your communities at the top of your profile and in your public interests
- If your profile is public, you appear in the community's member list
- You may be added automatically to communities that match interests on your profile
- To leave, tap Joined in the top right of the community, then Leave

How do you post to a community?
There are two ways:
- Open the community and start a post from its page, or start a normal post and tap Add a topic.
- If you used Add a topic, tap the community's name in the results.
- Write the post and tap Post.
- Threads may show a relevant post in a community even without the tag
- Your privacy settings still apply. Public posts can be seen by non-members too, for example in For you
- If your profile is private, only your approved followers can see your community posts
- Tap Options in the top right of a community to add it to your feeds, post about it or share it

What are flair, custom reactions and champions?
- Custom emoji reactions appear only for members, on posts that carry the community tag
- Flair is a label under your username on community posts. Choose it with Options, then Choose flair. Only members can use it, and only if a champion has set it up
- Champions are members recognised for posts that spark conversation, regular replies and being followed by other members
- Champions can create flair with Options, then Create flair or Manage flair. Meta reviews champions, so the badge isn't permanent
- To remove a champion badge, tap Edit profile, Interests, the community, then Decline badge. You can't earn it again after that

What are live chats in communities?
Live chats are public group chats for live events. Meta launched them in April 2026 in the NBAThreads community and said other communities would follow gradually. In June 2026 it said they would expand to more communities, with co-hosting.
- Find a live chat at the top of a community feed, or through a link in a shared post
- Inside, you can send messages, photos, videos and links, and react
- If a chat is full, you can still watch, react and vote in polls
- Chats stay publicly discoverable after they end
- Hosts are a select group of creators, including community champions

Why can't you find or use a community?
- There isn't one yet. Only popular topic tags become communities, after a review
- Members can't see your posts. Your profile may be private, so only approved followers see them
- You're in a community you didn't join. Meta may add you based on interests on your profile
- You can't pick flair. Flair only exists once a champion sets it up
- You can't type in a live chat. It may be full, but you can still watch, react and vote
