What does the Meta pixel do?
The Meta pixel is a piece of code you put on your website. Once it's set up, it logs actions people take there, which Meta calls events, such as adding an item to a basket or making a purchase. You see those events in Meta Events Manager, and in Ads Manager you can build custom audiences from them or use them for retargeting. Meta lists three main uses:
- Showing your ads to the right people, including people who visited a page or took an action on your site.
- Driving more sales, by letting automatic bidding reach people more likely to take the action you care about.
- Measuring what happens after people see your ads.

How do you create the pixel and add it to your site?
Before you start, Meta says you need a business website or app, and you or your developer must be able to update the website's code or tag manager if you add the pixel by hand. Then:
- Go to Meta Events Manager.
- Click Connect data, select Web and click Connect.
- Enter a name for your pixel and click Create pixel. This creates a new pixel ID in Events Manager.
- Enter your website URL and click Check. If a partner integration appears, click Next and follow its on-screen steps. If not, click Next.
- Choose Get guidance (Meta's recommendation) to follow setup suggestions in Events Manager, or Do it yourself.
- If you chose Do it yourself, select Meta pixel only, or Conversions API and Meta pixel, and click Next.
- For Meta pixel only, choose Install code manually or Check for partner. If a developer is adding it, click Email instructions instead.

Where do the base code and events go?
Meta splits setup into two parts: the base code, which goes on your website, and events, which measure specific actions such as a purchase. You can add events through a partner integration, Meta's point-and-click event setup tool or code. Meta's best practices for the code itself:
- Everything between the script tags must match your pixel base code exactly. If you used a tag manager, check it there, because you won't see the code on the page.
- Event code goes after the base code: your site's original code, then the pixel base code, then the standard event code.
- Standard event names are case sensitive. Meta's example: writing viewcontent instead of ViewContent creates a custom event called viewcontent.
- One pixel can cover your whole website. Meta notes two pixels may be needed if, for example, two agencies run ads for you.
- Meta also recommends sending the same key events, such as purchases, through the Conversions API as well, to catch events the pixel misses.

How do you check the pixel is working?
Meta says a working pixel sends a Page view event when someone loads a page with the base code, and the pixel's status in Events Manager changes to Active. To test events as you click around your site:
- Go to Events Manager and click Data sources in the left menu.
- Select your pixel's name and ID, then click Test events.
- In the browser events section, enter your website URL and click Open website.
- Use your site as a customer would. Your actions appear in the Test events tab.
- Click Clear activity when you've finished.

What if the pixel isn't showing events?
Work through Meta's own checks:
- Keep the test events page open: Meta only records website activity there while that page is open, and test data stays for 24 hours or until you clear it.
- Give it time. Meta says data may take 30 minutes or more to appear in your analytics.
- Check the base code and event names against the rules above, and look at the Diagnostics tab in Events Manager for problems Meta has detected.
- If you can't access the ad account, install Meta Ads Data Advisor (formerly Meta Pixel Helper), a free Chrome and Edge extension that shows which pixel and events loaded. Meta says to turn off ad blockers so it can detect them.
- Don't send prohibited information. Meta's terms bar health, financial and children's data, and you mustn't put your pixel on websites you don't own without permission.

Where Zolyp fits with the pixel
Zolyp is our product, so weigh this section with that in mind. Zolyp doesn't install pixels or run ads. It works on the organic side, keeping your Page posting so there's a steady stream of visitors for the pixel to measure. Tagging the links in your posts with UTM parameters, for example with our UTM builder tool, also makes that traffic easier to read in your web analytics.
Zolyp plans the week across your content themes, writes the captions and designs the visuals against your Brand Brain (your tone, colours and rules, saved once), then schedules and publishes to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Threads. You review and approve the week, and Autopilot lets you hand off publishing theme by theme once you trust the output. Plans that create the posts start at $29 a month, with a 3-day free trial and no card required.
Common questions
Do I need a developer to install the Meta pixel?
Not always. Meta offers partner integrations for some website platforms. If you add the code by hand, Meta says you may need a developer's help, and you can email them the instructions from Events Manager.
What happened to Meta Pixel Helper?
Meta says it is now Meta Ads Data Advisor, a free browser extension for Chrome and Edge that checks your pixel installation and events and can help fix problems.
How long does it take for pixel data to show up?
Meta says data may take 30 minutes or more to appear in your analytics. Use the test events tool to check events in the meantime.
Can I use more than one Meta pixel on my website?
Meta says one pixel can cover your whole website, but two may be needed in some cases, for example if two agencies run ads for your business.
What data must I not send through the pixel?
Meta prohibits sharing information such as health, financial or children's data, or anything not allowed under its terms or the law. Review your event names, parameters and URLs regularly.
