What is an X Space, and who can host one?

A Space is a live audio conversation on X. Spaces are public: anyone can join as a listener, including people who don't follow you, and live Spaces appear at the top of the Home timeline. Hosts choose who speaks.

  • You can start a Space only in the X app for iPhone or Android. On the web you can join and listen
  • Accounts with protected posts can't create a Space, though they can join and speak in other people's
  • Community Spaces, hosted inside an X Community, are currently available only to some admins and moderators in the apps

How do you start a Space?

Spaces show live captions automatically, a few seconds behind. The Space stays live until you end it, and X can also end a Space that breaks its rules.

  1. Long press the compose button on your Home timeline and tap the Spaces icon. You can also use the Spaces tab at the bottom of the timeline.
  2. Name your Space so people know what it's about.
  3. Toggle on Record Space if you want a replay.
  4. Tap Start your Space. You join with your microphone off, as the only speaker.
  5. Add speakers or co-hosts with the people icon, or by tapping someone's profile picture. Listeners can tap Request to ask to speak.
  6. Tap the share icon and choose Share via a post so people can find it.

How do you schedule a Space?

  1. Open Spaces the same way as above.
  2. Tap Schedule for later, or the scheduler icon.
  3. Pick the date and time for your Space to go live.
  4. Share the scheduled Space in a post. Guests can tap the card to get a reminder, and you get push and in-app reminders as the start time approaches.
  • To edit, share or cancel a scheduled Space: open Spaces, tap the scheduler icon at the top, tap the more icon on the Space and choose an option. Tap Save changes after editing
  • X's pages disagree on the limits. Its Spaces FAQ says you can schedule up to 30 days ahead and have up to 10 scheduled Spaces; its hosting guide says one scheduled Space at a time, up to 14 days ahead. Plan for the stricter limit
  • Impromptu Spaces don't count towards the scheduled limit

How do co-hosts and speakers work?

  • Up to 2 co-hosts plus 11 speakers including the host, so 13 people can speak at once. There's no limit on listeners
  • Co-hosts can invite speakers, manage speaker requests, remove participants, edit the Space name, manage pinned posts and mute speakers
  • Co-hosts can't add or remove other co-hosts or end the Space
  • If the host drops out, the first co-host added becomes the primary admin. Hosts can also hand over admin rights
  • Hosts and co-hosts can mute, remove, report and block people. Blocking someone in a Space also blocks their X account

How do you record and promote a Space?

Our advice for a small business: keep it to one clear topic, such as a product Q&A or a chat with a local partner, schedule it a few days ahead so people can set reminders, and invite a co-host to manage requests while you talk.

  • Recordings are public as soon as the Space ends, and stay available until you delete them from the more icon on the recording
  • After the Space, you'll see how many people attended and a link to share the recording. Edit start time lets you cut dead air from the beginning
  • Recordings show the host, co-hosts and speakers. Listeners aren't visible
  • Pin your Space announcement to your profile, and share useful posts into the Space with Share to Space so late joiners see them

Why can't you start or schedule a Space?

  • You're on x.com. Starting a Space needs the iPhone or Android app
  • Your posts are protected. Accounts with protected posts can't create Spaces
  • You've reached the scheduled Space limit. Cancel or run an existing one first
  • Reminders aren't arriving. Turn on notifications for Spaces; X's help page on notifications on mobile devices has the steps
  • You're trying to host inside a Community. That's only available to some admins and moderators
