How does X decide who sees a brand's posts?
X's help centre explains that the For You timeline shows posts from accounts and Topics you follow, plus recommended posts from accounts you don't follow. X ranks them with a neural network that is continuously trained on interactions such as likes, reposts and replies. The signals it names include accounts and Topics you follow, posts you like, posts liked by people in your network and accounts followed by people in your network. X also filters out content that might be harmful, abusive or spammy before showing it.
Two things follow for a brand. First, your posts reach new people mainly through other people: when someone in a network likes or replies to you, their followers are more likely to see it. Second, the Following timeline shows posts only from accounts people follow, in time order, so followers you've earned still see you there. Growth is about earning interactions from the right people, not posting more.

Is your profile ready for new followers?
Every reply you leave sends people to your profile, so fix it first. Switching to a Professional Account is free. To qualify, X says you need a complete profile with an account name, a bio and a profile picture, and your identity must be clear.
- Use a profile image people recognise as your brand, such as your logo or the owner's face.
- Use the header like a billboard, as X suggests: what's new or timely.
- Write a bio that says what you do, your value and why someone should follow.
- Convert to a Professional Account and choose the closest category.
- If you're in the US and have a physical location, add a Location Spotlight with your hours and a contact button.
- Pin a post that introduces the business and links to your site.

How do you use replies to grow on X?
Replies are the fastest growth tool a small account has. X's business guide says engaging with other posts helps build relationships and makes your account easier to discover, and a reply gets the full character limit, so there's space to be useful.
- Build a private List of accounts your customers already read: local news, industry voices, suppliers, complementary businesses.
- Check the List once or twice a day.
- Reply where you can add something: an answer, a fact from experience, a fair counterpoint or a photo.
- Use a quote post when your addition stands on its own and is worth showing to your followers.
- When someone replies to you, reply back. Conversations, not single posts, are what people remember.
- Weak reply: "Great post!" It adds nothing, and nobody taps through to see who wrote it.
- Better reply: a specific answer, such as how long a job usually takes and the one thing that slows it down.
- Best reply: a short, useful point plus your own photo or example, so people can see you know the work.

What should you post to earn follows?
People follow when they expect more of something useful. Pick one topic you can own, then build a few repeatable series around it: weekly tips, short opinions on your field's news, behind-the-scenes photos, and polls that ask your customers something real. Keep posts real, conversational and concise, as X's guide puts it, with one or two hashtags at most.
Threads on X suit how-to content and stories that need more than 280 characters; X shows threads of two or three posts connected by a line, and longer ones with a Show this thread prompt. Polls, which run from 5 minutes to 7 days, are a low-effort way to get people interacting. Our X content ideas guide has 40 starting points.
Consistency is what turns a visitor into a follower. Someone who lands on your profile from a reply scrolls down to see what else you post. If they find a steady run of useful posts on one subject, following is an easy decision; if they find three posts from last spring, it isn't. Plan the week ahead in one sitting, so a busy few days doesn't leave the profile empty.

Where else on X can a brand find new people?
Your own followers are a small slice of X. Three features put you in front of people who don't follow you yet:
- Communities: topic groups where posts can be seen by anyone on X but only members can take part. You need a public account to join, and Community posts also appear on your profile and in search.
- Spaces: live audio conversations. X's business site says live Spaces appear at the top of the timeline. A Space can have a host, up to 2 co-hosts and up to 11 speakers including the host, and hosts can schedule a Space in advance and record it.
- Lists: a List is public by default, so anyone can follow it, and you can share it by link, by DM or in a post. A public List you curate, such as the best independent shops in your town, gives people a reason to visit your profile.

What growth tactics break X's rules?
X's authenticity policy forbids several tactics that still get sold as growth hacks. Using them can get an account limited, which undoes far more growth than they ever add. Even when they work for a while, the followers they bring aren't people who will ever buy from you, so your replies and link clicks stay flat while the follower count rises. The honest version of each tactic, such as following accounts you actually want to hear from, or asking happy customers to follow you, is slower but builds an audience that's worth something. X's policy lists, among others:
- Follow churn: following and then unfollowing large numbers of accounts to inflate your follower count.
- Indiscriminate following of many unrelated accounts in a short time, especially by automation.
- Buying, selling or trading likes, reposts, replies, follows or views, or using services that do.
- Coordinating with others to exchange engagement.
- Bulk, aggressive or high-volume unsolicited replies, mentions or DMs.
- Replying to unrelated posts to promote yourself.

Worked example (hypothetical): a bookkeeper's eight-week growth routine
This routine is invented to show the method. A two-person bookkeeping firm wants to be known among small business owners in its region. Each week it posts three times and spends 15 minutes a day on replies from a private List of local business accounts and finance journalists.
To measure it, the firm opens the Post Activity Dashboard each month. It's free, shows impressions, engagements, engagement rate, link clicks, reposts, likes and replies, and defaults to the last 28 days. The firm also asks each new client how they heard about it.
| Weeks | Focus | What the firm does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Profile and Lists | Professional Account, clear bio, pinned intro post; builds two private Lists |
| 3 to 4 | Replies | Answers tax-deadline questions in local threads; posts one tip a week |
| 5 to 6 | Series | Starts "Receipt of the week", a weekly post on what's deductible |
| 7 | Community | Joins a small business Community and answers questions there |
| 8 | Space | Hosts a 30-minute question-and-answer Space before a filing deadline |

Where Zolyp fits (disclosed: it's our product)
Growth on X comes from replies, which only you can write. The scheduled posts around them can be planned and written for you. Zolyp, which we make, plans the week, writes and designs posts against your Brand Brain and publishes them to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Threads once you approve them. Lite is $9 a month per brand for publishing posts you already have; plans that create the posts start at $29 a month, with a 3-day free trial.
Common questions
How long does it take to grow on X?
There's no reliable timeline. Give a routine of regular posts and daily replies at least two or three months before judging it, and compare months rather than days.
Does buying followers help on X?
No, and it breaks X's rules. X's authenticity policy forbids buying or trading follows and other engagement, and the followers wouldn't be customers anyway.
Do replies help a brand grow on X?
Yes. X's business guide says engaging with other posts helps build relationships and makes your account easier to discover, and its For You timeline learns from interactions such as replies.
Should a business follow back everyone on X?
No. Follow accounts whose posts you want to see. Following and unfollowing in bulk to grow your numbers is follow churn, which X's rules forbid.
What should my X bio say?
X's business guide says to share what you do, your value and why people should follow. Add your location if you serve a local area, and pin a post that explains how to get in touch.
Are X Communities worth joining for a business?
If there's an active Community for your trade or area, yes. Posts there can be seen by anyone on X, but only members can join in, so answer questions rather than advertise.
