X Lists: how to create, use and pin them

An X List is a timeline of posts from only the accounts you choose. To make one on x.com, click Lists in the navigation bar, click the Create new List icon, give it a name (up to 25 characters) and description, choose private or public, click Next, add people, and click Done. You can pin a List so it sits next to For you and Following.

What is an X List?

X Lists let you organise accounts by group, topic or interest. Opening a List shows a timeline of posts from only the accounts on it, in place of the mix in For you. You can make your own Lists, follow other people's, and pin your favourites to the top of your Home timeline. X also uses the Lists you follow as one source for recommendations in For you.

In the iOS and Android apps you may see a Discover new Lists prompt in your Home timeline. Tap Follow on a suggestion you like, or Show more to browse X's Lists discovery page, which has a search box for finding more.

How do you add people, edit or delete a List?

On x.com, go to the account's profile, click the more icon, and select Add or remove from Lists. Tick or untick the Lists in the pop-up. You don't need to follow an account to add it. To check it worked, open the List and click List members.

To manage members from the List itself, open it, choose Edit List, then Manage members: search to add people, or remove them.

To change a List's name or description, go to your profile, open the Lists tab, choose one of the Lists you created and select Edit. To get rid of it, select Delete List. Deleting a List you made doesn't affect the accounts on it, and unpinning a List never deletes it.

How do you follow and pin Lists?

  • Follow someone else's List: on their profile, open the more menu, choose View Lists, pick a List and select Follow. You don't have to follow the people in it.
  • Pin a List: open Lists from your profile icon menu and tap the pin icon next to it. It appears to the right of your For you and Following timelines.
  • Unpin: tap the pin again under Pinned. This doesn't delete the List.
  • Reorder pinned Lists: in Lists, tap Edit, then press and hold the reorder icon and drag.
  • Share a List: use the share icon on the List's page to copy the link, send it by Direct Message, or post it.

Can you see which Lists you're on, or leave one?

Yes, you can see them: open Lists, select the more icon next to the new List icon, then Lists you're on. You can't simply leave someone else's List, though. X says the only way to remove yourself is to block the List's creator.

How can a small business use X Lists?

X's own business guide suggests Lists for keeping tabs on specific accounts, industries and communities. A few that are worth setting up:

  • Customers and regulars: see what they post and reply when it's relevant.
  • Competitors: a private List keeps an eye on offers and announcements without following anyone.
  • Local: businesses, journalists and organisers in your area, for partnerships and local news.
  • Industry voices: suppliers, trade bodies and experts worth quoting or replying to.
  • People who reply to you a lot: make sure you never miss their posts.
  • An event List: speakers, exhibitors and attendees before a trade show or local event, so you can follow the conversation and reply while it's happening.
  • A public List you curate for customers, such as local suppliers you recommend, gives people a reason to follow your account.

Where does Zolyp fit? (Disclosure: Zolyp is our product)

Lists are for listening, and that part stays with you; Zolyp doesn't do social listening. What it does is the posting side: it plans, writes and schedules your X posts in your brand voice, so the time you'd spend writing can go on reading your Lists and replying.

Common questions

Can people see that I added them to an X List?

On a public List, yes: X lets people see the Lists they're on through Lists you're on. A private List is only accessible to you, so use private for competitor or research Lists.

How long can an X List name be?

Up to 25 characters, and it can't begin with a number, according to X's help centre.

How do I remove myself from someone's X List?

X says the only way is to block the List's creator. Open Lists, choose Lists you're on, open the List, and block the creator from the more menu.

How do I find good Lists to follow on X?

Look at the Lists of accounts you respect: open the more menu on their profile and choose View Lists. In the X app you may also see a Discover new Lists prompt in your Home timeline, with a Show more link to X's Lists discovery page and its search box.

Do I have to follow people to add them to a List?

No. X's help centre says you don't need to follow an account to add it to your List, and you can follow other people's Lists without following the accounts in them.
