What does verification mean on Pinterest?

Pinterest's help pages describe verification through one route, the Verified Merchant Program, and separate two levels:

  • Approved merchant: you've claimed and verified your domain and added a catalogue, and Pinterest has reviewed your business against its merchant guidelines
  • Verified merchant: an approved merchant that also meets the program's requirements
  • Verified merchants get a blue checkmark on their profile and Pins, and can use extra features such as merchant details, which show the values and communities your brand represents
  • The pages we checked don't describe a checkmark for businesses that don't sell products. Product Pins must show a specific item for sale, and services are excluded

What are the requirements for the blue checkmark?

You need to meet all of these. If you don't, you won't be verified.

How do you become an approved merchant first?

Before you add a catalogue, Pinterest asks for a business account, a claimed website, the Pinterest tag and a website that meets its merchant guidelines. To claim your website with an HTML tag:

  1. Log in to your Pinterest business account and click the chevron-down icon at the top right.
  2. Select Settings, then click Link to Pinterest.
  3. Click Claim next to Websites.
  4. Copy the HTML tag and click Continue.
  5. Add the tag to the head section of your site's index.html file, then return to Pinterest, enter your website URL and click Verify.
  6. Install the Pinterest tag, then add your catalogue's data source so Pinterest can review your business.
  • You can also claim with an HTML file, a DNS TXT record or, for some accounts, Google Merchant Center
  • You must own the domain and be able to edit its code, so most marketplace shops on Etsy, eBay or Amazon can't be claimed
  • Your site needs easy-to-find contact details, a shipping policy and a refund policy

Which merchants and products can't qualify?

Pinterest's merchant guidelines rule out:

  • Affiliate marketers and wholesale retailers
  • Shops without a clear, easy-to-find return policy covering whether returns are accepted, the process, timings and contact details
  • Sites with broken links or incomplete pages, that force people to register to see products, or that are unsafe or deceptive
  • Products without current price and stock information, which Pinterest needs to be no more than seven days old
  • Prohibited products such as gambling, prescription medicines, tobacco and weapons, plus restricted categories such as alcohol
  • Pinterest has announced updated merchant guidelines effective 12 November 2026, so check the latest version before you apply changes

Why did you lose the checkmark, and how do you get it back?

Verification isn't permanent. Pinterest checks the requirements continuously:

  • Missing any requirement at any point suspends you, and so can excessive user reports on your product Pins
  • You're alerted in Business hub and by email, and you have 30 days to fix the issues. Fix them in time and you're re-enrolled automatically
  • After 30 days without a fix, you stay suspended and lose verified merchant status
  • A suspension from the program may not affect your approved merchant status, so your catalogue and ads can keep running. Losing approved merchant status suspends you from the program automatically
  • Changes can take up to 48 hours to show, so wait two days after a fix before assuming it hasn't worked
  • A common gap is a quiet week: you need page visit, add to cart and checkout events every 7 days, so check your tag if sales slow down

Common questions

Join the Verified Merchant Program by becoming an approved merchant and meeting its requirements. Pinterest verifies you automatically once you qualify.

Can I apply for verification on Pinterest?

Pinterest's page doesn't describe an application. It says you're verified automatically once you meet every requirement, and not verified if you don't.

Can a service business get verified on Pinterest?

Pinterest's pages don't describe a route. Verification runs through product catalogues, and product Pins must show a specific item for sale, excluding services.

How long does it take to get verified on Pinterest?

Your business account must be at least three months old and your website at least nine months old. Changes to eligibility can take up to 48 hours to show.

Why did my Pinterest checkmark disappear?

You were probably suspended for missing a requirement or for user reports. Check Business hub and your email, then fix the issue within 30 days to be re-enrolled.
