What does the Pinterest tag do?

The Pinterest tag is a piece of code on your website that tracks visitors and what they do after seeing your Pinterest ads. You need a business account and an advertiser account before you add it. With it, you can:

  • Track and optimise conversions, such as sign-ups and purchases
  • Measure campaign performance
  • Build audiences from your site visitors for targeting
  • Become a verified merchant and access conversion insights
  • Pair it with the Pinterest Conversions API for fuller conversion data

How do you install the Pinterest tag?

You need a computer for this; Pinterest doesn't support installing the tag from a phone.

  1. Log in to your Pinterest business account and click the menu icon at the top left.
  2. Under Business, click Conversions.
  3. If your claimed domain works with an integration partner, the partners are listed under Install your Pinterest tag. Click one to see its instructions.
  4. Otherwise, click Get started.
  5. To use a partner, paste your website URL under Website URL, click Check and select the partner.
  6. To hand it over, click Email instruction, enter your developer's email and click Send.
  7. To do it yourself, click Skip at the bottom right and follow the base code steps below.

How do you add the base code manually?

The base code has to go on every page of your site before any event code will work. Always copy your own code from Pinterest, because it contains your unique tag ID.

  1. In Conversions, click Tag manager on the left, then Install the Pinterest tag.
  2. Click Skip at the bottom right.
  3. Click Copy code below the grey box.
  4. Paste the code between the <head> and </head> tags of every page. Where this goes depends on your website platform.
  5. Click Continue to move on to automatic enhanced match.
  • Consent: if you operate in the EU, Pinterest says you must get legally compliant consent before sending events. Set it with pintrk('setconsent', true) or false; when false, events aren't sent and the tag's first-party cookies are deleted
  • To stop the tag setting first-party cookies, set fp_cookie to false in the base code

Which event codes should you add?

Event codes track specific actions and only go on the pages where those actions happen. Which ones you need depends on the campaign or feature:

  • Other standard events include Search, ViewCategory, WatchVideo, Subscribe, Contact, Schedule, StartTrial and InitiateCheckout
  • A custom event covers an action unique to your business, but you have to create it yourself
Campaign or featureRequired events

How do you test the tag, and fix common errors?

Test before you rely on the numbers. In Ads Manager:

  1. Under Business, click Conversions, then Test events on the left.
  2. Enter your website's URL under Website URL and click Launch.
  3. In the new tab, do what a customer would: view a product, add to cart, sign up.
  4. Go back to Pinterest. Your actions should be logged; click an event to see its data.
  5. Click Clear events to start again. You can also check any page with Pinterest's Tag Helper extension for Chrome.
  • Enhanced match shows as empty or undefined: often expected when the visitor isn't logged in. Test after signing in or at checkout
  • The same product ID on many events: the product_id value should be a dynamic variable, not fixed
  • Checkout with no value, a value of 0 or over 150,000: the value variable is usually misconfigured, often around decimal places
  • No product ID on PageVisit or AddToCart: add it if you want dynamic retargeting

Measuring the organic side

Disclosure: this is our product. The tag measures what people do on your site. For the Pins themselves, Zolyp's Analyze feature writes a plain-language weekly summary of the posts it published: what landed, what didn't, and what to change next. There's a 3-day free trial, no card required.

Common questions

Do I need the Pinterest tag if I don't run ads?

Usually not, but Pinterest requires it before you can add a product catalogue, and you need its events to join the Verified Merchant Program or use conversion insights.

How long does the Pinterest tag take to work?

Pinterest says it can take up to 24 hours after installation to show in Ads Manager.

Can I install the Pinterest tag from my phone?

No. Pinterest's help page says you need a computer to install the tag.

Do I need a separate tag for each ad account?

Yes. Pinterest says each ad account needs its own Pinterest tag and audiences if you want to track conversions or target specific audiences.

Does the Pinterest tag need cookie consent?

In the EU, yes: Pinterest says you must get legally compliant consent before sending events, and gives a setconsent call to record the visitor's choice.
