Why don't views turn into sales on their own?

Most people open TikTok to be entertained or to learn something, not to shop. TikTok's own small business guide, citing studies it commissioned from Material, says 55% of TikTok users discover new brands and products on the platform and 33% have bought a product because they saw it on TikTok. Discovery happens; the purchase takes more steps.

So the gap between views and customers is usually a missing step, not a bad video. A viewer liked the video, but didn't know what to do next, couldn't find the link, or landed on a page that didn't match what they saw.

There is also a timing gap. Someone may watch a video today and need a plumber, a cake or a haircut next month. Regular posting keeps you in mind until then, which is why the account as a whole sells, not any single video.

Map the path from video to customer

Write down each step a viewer takes, then look for the one where most people drop out:

The quickest way is to do it yourself on your phone: watch one of your videos, tap through to your profile, tap the link and try to book or buy. Time it, and count the taps. Then ask a friend to do the same without help, and watch where they hesitate.

StepWhat should happenIf people drop out here
VideoThe right viewer watches to the endSharpen the hook and the topic
ProfileThey visit to see moreMake the bio say who you help and what to do next
Link or messageThey tap your link or send a messageUse one direct link and reply to messages quickly

Enquiry or orderThey book, buy or ask for a quoteShorten the form, show prices, remove extra steps

Make your profile do the selling

Your profile is where an interested viewer decides whether to act. TikTok lets you add a website link if you have at least 1,000 followers or a Verified Business Account, and it recommends direct links so people reach the page in just a few steps.

Two details from TikTok's help centre are worth knowing. Links open in TikTok's in-app browser, which may ask people to open some pages in their device's browser. And TikTok no longer supports profile links that open or log people into other social media apps.

  • Bio: who you help, where, and the one action you want ("Book online below").
  • Link: straight to the booking page, shop page or quote form, not your home page.
  • Name and place: make your business name and town obvious, so local viewers know you're nearby.
  • Videos: end each one with the same next step, so whichever video a visitor watches points the same way.

Calls to action that work on TikTok

Give each video one ask, matched to how ready the viewer is. A teaching video earns a follow; a before-and-after video can earn a booking.

Vary the ask across the week rather than repeating "link in bio" on every video. Viewers who aren't ready to buy will still follow or save a useful video, and they're the people most likely to buy later.

  • Say the ask aloud and put it on screen in the last few seconds.
  • Don't ask for likes or comments for their own sake. It reads as engagement bait and doesn't move anyone closer to buying.
Video typeA fitting call to action (example)
Teaching"Follow for one tip like this every week."
Behind the scenes"Want one of these? The link's on our profile."
Proof or result"Booking for next month is open now. Link in bio."
Product in use"Tap the link on our profile to order."
Question answered"Message us your question and we'll answer it in a video."

Ways to sell inside TikTok

Some customers never leave the app. TikTok gives businesses several ways to meet them there; each has its own guide on our blog:

Pick the one or two that match how you already sell. A salon that takes bookings by message needs fast replies more than a shop; a product business may get more from TikTok Shop than from lead forms.

  • Messages: reply to enquiries quickly; our guide to TikTok automatic messages covers the replies you can set up in advance.
  • Leads manager: TikTok says the Business Suite for Verified Business Accounts includes a leads manager alongside analytics.
  • TikTok Shop: where available, sell products directly in TikTok, with product links in your videos.
  • Lead generation ads: Instant Forms collect enquiries without sending people to your site. TikTok's lead guide suggests keeping them under 10 questions.
  • Spark Ads and Promote: pay to show your best-selling organic video to more of the right people.

How do you know which videos bring customers?

TikTok analytics show views and engagement. They don't show who walked into your shop. Close the gap yourself:

Perfect tracking isn't possible, and you don't need it. You need enough evidence to decide which series to make more of.

A simple extra signal for shops and service businesses is a TikTok-only offer code, mentioned in videos and nowhere else. Every time someone uses it, you know TikTok played a part, even if they booked by phone.

  1. Tag your profile link with UTM parameters so your website analytics label TikTok visits.
  2. If you sell online, set up the TikTok Pixel to see actions people take on your site.
  3. Add "How did you hear about us?" to booking and enquiry forms, with TikTok as an option.
  4. Ask in person, and note the answer, including which video they remember.
  5. Once a month, match enquiries to the videos posted in the week before.
  6. Make more of the series that bring enquiries, even if they get fewer views.

Worked example (hypothetical): a nail salon's path from view to booking

An invented example. A nail salon's videos get steady views but few bookings. Mapping the path shows the problem: the profile link goes to the home page, and the booking button is two taps further on.

  • Fix 1: the link now goes straight to the online booking page, tagged with UTM parameters.
  • Fix 2: the bio reads "Gel and nail art in [town]. Book online below."
  • Fix 3: each design video ends with the same line, said and shown: "Book this set, link on our profile."
  • Fix 4: the booking form asks how the client heard about the salon.
  • Result to check after a month: bookings tagged as TikTok, and which designs clients mention.

Common questions

How do I get customers from TikTok?

Give every video a next step for the right viewer, make your profile link go straight to a booking or product page, reply to messages quickly and track which videos bring enquiries.

Why do my TikTok videos get views but no sales?

Usually a step is missing: no clear call to action, a link that goes to your home page, or a page that doesn't match the video. Map each step and fix the one where people drop out.

Can I put a link in my TikTok videos?

The dependable place for a website link is your profile. TikTok lets you add one with a Verified Business Account or at least 1,000 followers, so point viewers there in each video.

How can I track sales from TikTok?

Tag your profile link with UTM parameters, install the TikTok Pixel if you sell online, and ask every new customer how they heard about you.

Should I use TikTok Shop or my own website?

It depends where your customers prefer to buy. TikTok Shop keeps people in the app where it's available; your website keeps customer data with you. Many businesses test one first.

What's a good call to action for TikTok?

One clear, specific ask that matches the video, said aloud and shown on screen near the end, such as "Book this set, link on our profile." Avoid asking for likes or comments for their own sake.
