What is the TikTok Pixel?
The TikTok Pixel is a piece of code you place on your website so it can share website events, such as a page view or a purchase, with TikTok. TikTok says you can use it to:
- Measure traffic on your website.
- Measure how your ad campaigns perform.
- Optimise campaigns and find new customers.
- What it collects, per TikTok: ad and event information, timestamps, IP address, user agent (device and browser), cookies, and page metadata and button clicks.
- Cookies: third-party cookies are on by default with the Pixel. First-party cookies are optional.

How do you set up the TikTok Pixel?
TikTok's steps for a website connection:
- Log in to TikTok Ads Manager and go to Tools.
- Click Events Manager.
- Click Connect Data Source.
- Select Web.
- Enter your website URL.
- Choose Partner Integration or Manual Setup, then name your Pixel and follow the setup flow.
- Partner Integration takes you to supported partners, such as Shopify and Google Tag Manager, so you don't have to touch your site's code.
- Manual Setup means installing the base code on your website, then configuring your events.
- Pixel names can be up to 128 characters, including spaces. TikTok suggests naming it after your website or domain.
- TikTok recommends setting up the Pixel and its Events API together for the best measurement.

Which events should you track?
Events are the actions you want to count. TikTok recommends tracking the whole customer journey, from viewing a product to buying it. These are some of its predefined standard events:
- Don't send sensitive data about visitors. TikTok says event names that break its policies may be removed.
| Event code | Fires when a visitor | Web objective |
|---|---|---|

| AddToCart | Adds an item to the cart | Sales |
| InitiateCheckout | Proceeds to checkout | Sales |
| AddPaymentInfo | Adds payment information at checkout | Sales |
| Purchase | Makes a purchase | Sales |
| Contact | Contacts you | Lead |
| Schedule | Books an appointment | Lead |

How do you check the Pixel is working?
TikTok gives three ways to verify your setup:
- Install the TikTok Pixel Helper extension for Chrome, open your site and check for errors.
- In Events Manager, use Test Events to fire test events and watch them arrive.
- Open the Diagnostics tab in Events Manager and fix any issues it lists.
- Events Manager's Overview shows event counts and your funnel, and its Change log records edits.
- Data can lag. TikTok says events can take up to 24 hours, or a little more, to show.

Why isn't your TikTok Pixel working?
Common Pixel Helper errors and TikTok's fixes:
- Event not active in Ads Manager: complete the action on your own site, such as a real purchase or form submission. TikTok suggests a 100% coupon code or a test card. Test Events doesn't count for this.
- Then wait 24 hours and select the Pixel under Data Connection in your ad group settings.
| Error | What to do |
|---|---|
| Pixel code is not installed in header | Place the code as early as possible on the page, ideally between the head tags |
| Invalid Pixel ID | Find the correct Pixel ID in Events Manager |
| First-party cookies not found | In Events Manager settings, go to Cookie Info and turn on first-party cookies |
| Event name empty or invalid | Add or correct the event name in your site's code |
| Value parameter format invalid | Use a plain number such as 100 or 12.34, with no currency signs or commas |
| Currency or value missing | Send both together |

Where Zolyp fits (from the team behind this guide)
Zolyp, which publishes this guide, is an AI social media manager: it plans, writes, designs and schedules posts for Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Threads, and you approve the week before anything goes out. It doesn't install the Pixel or run ads. The Pixel measures what people do on your site after they tap through; Zolyp's weekly report covers the organic side, the posts that got them interested.
