How to delete or deactivate your Threads profile

Meta says it can't delete a Threads profile for you, for security reasons, so you need to be logged in. You may want to download a copy of your information first. In the Threads app:

1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
2. Tap Menu in the top right.
3. Tap Meta Account, then tap Manage account.
4. Tap Manage next to the profile you want to delete.
5. Tap Deactivation or deletion, then tap Delete profile.
6. Select your reason, then tap Continue.

• Your profile, content, likes and followers are permanently deleted 30 days after the request. Until then the profile isn't visible to other people on Threads
• To cancel, log back in within the 30 days and tap Log in to confirm. Meta notes the cancel period varies by region
• After deletion, you have to wait 90 days before you can sign up again with the same Instagram profile
• The full deletion process can take up to 90 days, and copies may stay in backup storage after that
• If a profile was removed for breaking the Community Standards, you may not be able to sign up again with the same account

Deactivating hides your profile, content and interactions on Threads until you reactivate. Nothing is deleted, and your Instagram account isn't affected. On threads.com, if you have Threads in Accounts Centre:

1. Click More on the left, then click Settings.
2. Click Accounts Centre, then Manage account.
3. Click Manage next to the Threads account, then Deactivation or deletion.
4. Click Deactivate account, then Continue.
5. Select your reason, then Continue.

• Without Accounts Centre: in the app, tap Menu, then Account, then Deactivate or delete profile. Tap Deactivate profile and confirm
• You can deactivate only once a week

If you turned on fediverse sharing, deleting or deactivating your profile turns it off, and Threads asks other servers to delete your profile and content. Meta says it can't guarantee they will, so copies may stay publicly visible.

If you cancel a deletion or reactivate, you have to wait 30 days before you can turn fediverse sharing on again.

Threads is moving settings into Meta Account, so menus differ between accounts. Check these:

• You see older menus. Meta says Threads in Meta Account isn't available everywhere, so look under Account settings, then Personal details, or under Account, then Deactivate or delete profile
• You're looking in Instagram. The steps start in the Threads app, and deleting Threads doesn't delete your Instagram or Facebook profile
• You deactivated recently. Deactivation is limited to once a week
• You asked support to do it. Meta can't delete a profile for you, so log in and request it yourself
