What happens when you delete a post on X?

If a post has your phone number, address or a customer's details in it, delete it quickly. Deleting won't pull back copies made in the meantime.

  • It's removed from your account, from your followers' timelines and from X search on x.com, X for iOS and X for Android
  • Reposts of it are removed too
  • The post, its metadata and its analytics are no longer publicly available on X
  • Quote posts that others made of it stay up, and so does any text people copied into their own posts
  • Copies on third-party websites, apps or search engines can stay: X says it can't remove posts that aren't on its own apps or x.com

How do you undo a repost or delete a quote post?

A quote post is your own post, so you delete it like any other: on your profile, open the More icon at the top of it, choose Delete Post and confirm. X notes that an undone repost or quote can still show on devices with cached timelines, or where it was cross-posted to other sites.

  1. Find the repost you want to remove. Its Repost icon is highlighted.
  2. Tap or click the Repost icon.
  3. In the app, tap Undo Repost to confirm. On x.com, clicking the highlighted button removes it.

Can you delete lots of posts at once on X?

No. X says it doesn't provide a way to bulk delete posts, so they come off one by one. For a completely fresh start without losing your username, X suggests creating another account with a temporary username, then switching usernames between the two accounts.

If you subscribe to X Premium, Undo post can catch mistakes before anyone sees them. It holds a post for 30 seconds by default (you can pick 5, 10, 20 or 60 seconds instead), and tapping Undo sends you back to the composer to edit or bin it.

Why can't you delete a post on X?

  • It isn't yours: X only lets you delete posts you posted. For someone else's post, mute, block or report instead
  • It's a repost: there's no Delete option, so undo the repost with the Repost icon
  • It's still in your Undo window (X Premium): it isn't public yet, so tap Undo to edit or delete it
  • It still shows in a search engine or on another site: X can't remove copies outside x.com and its apps
  • Someone quoted it: their quote post stays up after you delete the original

Common questions

Can I bulk delete posts on X?

No. X says it doesn't offer bulk deletion, so you have to delete posts one at a time.

Does deleting a post remove reposts of it?

Yes. Reposts are removed too. Quote posts and copied text in other people's posts are not.

Can I get a deleted post back?

X's help page doesn't describe a way to restore a deleted post, so save anything you might need before you delete it.

Can I delete someone else's post on X?

No. You can only delete posts you posted. You can mute or block the account, or report the post if it breaks X's rules.

Will a deleted post disappear from Google?

X removes it from x.com and its apps, but says it can't remove copies cached by third-party sites, apps or search engines.
