What's the difference between a repost and a quote post?

A repost shares someone's post with all your followers exactly as it is. A quote post shares it with your own comment, and media if you want, on top. Both reference the original post. You can also repost or quote your own older posts when they're relevant again, or repost your replies so all your followers see them.

One catch with quotes: when someone replies to your quote post, the original author isn't added to that conversation. Mention their username if you want them in it.

When should a business quote rather than repost?

Our view, not X's: repost when the post speaks for itself, such as a supplier's announcement or a customer's photo you're glad to share. Quote when you can add something, such as your local angle on news, a thank-you to a customer, or an answer to a question someone asked about you. A quote also behaves differently from the original in a few ways:

  • A quote post is your own post, so with X Premium you can edit it within the hour, which you can't do with a repost
  • Quote posts don't inherit reply limits the original author set, while replies and reposts do
  • If the original post is deleted, reposts of it are removed, but quote posts of it stay up

Why can't you repost or quote a post?

  • The account's posts are protected. Followers of a protected account can't use the Repost icon to repost or quote its posts
  • The post was deleted. Its reposts are removed with it
  • You're looking for a separate Quote button. Quoting lives inside the Repost icon, as Repost as Quote

Common questions

What is a quote post on X?

A repost with your own comment added. It shares the original post with your followers along with what you wrote, and you can add up to four photos, one GIF or a video.

Does the quoted post count towards the character limit?

No. X says the original post in your quote post doesn't count towards your character limit.

Does the original author see replies to my quote post?

Not automatically. X doesn't add the original author to the conversation under your quote; mention their username if you want them included.

Can I repost my own post on X?

Yes. X suggests reposting or quoting your own older posts when they're relevant again, and reposting your replies so all your followers see them.

Why is there no repost option on a post?

The account may have protected posts. X says followers of protected accounts can't repost or quote their posts.
