Should you deactivate or delete?

Deactivating hides your account; deleting removes it. Both need you to be able to log in.

Our advice for a business: if you're pausing, deactivate or archive posts rather than delete. You keep your followers and username for when you come back.

How do you permanently delete your account?

If Accounts Center shows Accounts at the bottom, the path is Personal details, then Account ownership and control, then Deactivation or deletion. Instagram says it's rolling out Meta Account settings, so you may see Meta Account in place of Accounts Center. You can delete from your phone or a computer.

  1. Tap your profile picture in the bottom right, then Menu in the top right.
  2. Tap Accounts Center, then Profiles and personal details.
  3. Tap Manage next to the account type you want to delete.
  4. Tap Deactivation or deletion, then the account you want to delete.
  5. Tap Delete account, then Continue, and follow the instructions to confirm.

What should you save before deleting?

Export a copy of your information first. Once the profile is deleted, Instagram's Export your information tool is no longer available to you. A profile scheduled for deletion can't be exported either unless you cancel the deletion.

For a business, also update the Instagram links on your website, emails and other profiles, and tell regular customers where to find you.

What happens after you ask to delete?

  • After 30 days your profile and information are permanently deleted. During that time other people can't see the content
  • The number of days you have to cancel varies by region
  • Deletion can take up to 90 days to finish, and copies may stay in backup storage after that
  • You can sign up again with the same username later, as long as nobody else has taken it
  • If the profile was removed for breaking the Community Standards, you may not get the username back

Why can't you deactivate or delete your account?

  • You can't log in. Instagram can't delete a profile for you, so recover access first
  • You deactivated in the last week. You can only deactivate once a week
  • The menu names don't match. Look for Meta Account instead of Accounts Center
  • You see a disabled message when you log in. That's a different process: see our guide to a disabled account
  • Your export won't start. Reactivate a deactivated profile, or cancel a scheduled deletion, then try again
