Is your account disabled, hacked or deleted?

  • Disabled: you see a message saying so when you log in. Accounts that don't follow the Community Standards may be disabled, and a disabled account isn't visible to others
  • No message: you may have a login issue, or someone may have got into your account
  • Deleted: by you or someone with your password. A deleted account can't be restored; you can sign up again with the same email, but may not get the same username
  • In some regions, Instagram disables accounts of people in certain age ranges to comply with local laws

How do you appeal a disabled account?

That's all Instagram's disabled-account page sets out, and it doesn't give a timeframe. For removed posts, Instagram says a review can take up to 90 days and may be closed before anyone looks at it, because some appeals are prioritised for human review.

Our advice: appeal once, clearly, and keep a note of the date. Meanwhile, tell customers how else to reach you.

  1. Open Instagram.
  2. Log in with your username and password.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to ask Instagram to review the decision.

How do you check your Account Status?

Instagram says that if you repeatedly post content that's removed, you may lose access to your account, and in most cases you'll get a warning first.

  1. Tap your profile picture in the bottom right.
  2. Tap Menu in the top right.
  3. Below More info and support, tap Account Status.
  • Removed content: posts, stories or comments taken down for breaking the Community Standards
  • Features you can't use: restrictions on your account, with options such as appealing
  • Request a review: ask Instagram to look again at removed content
  • Professional accounts also see Recommendations Guidelines, where you can edit or remove content, or tap Disagree with decision

How do you request a review of a removed post?

  1. Tap your profile picture, then Menu.
  2. Below More info and support, tap Help.
  3. Tap Account Status, then Removed content.
  4. Tap the removed content, then Request a review.
  5. Select your reason and tap Continue.
  6. Tap Submit, then Done.
  • You can also tap Ask for a review on the violation notification
  • Or go to Help, Support Requests, Violations, open the update and tap See options, then Request review
  • If Instagram finds it made a mistake, it tells you and reposts the content
  • Some types of content can't be reviewed

What if you still disagree?

You may be able to appeal to the Oversight Board. You must go through Instagram's own review first, and Instagram must have reviewed the content twice.

  • You have 15 days from the decision to appeal
  • Not every decision is eligible, and the board only picks a certain number of appeals
  • You check progress on the board's website with your reference number

Why can't you appeal, and how do you avoid this next time?

  • There's no disabled message. You're not disabled; try the login help or our hacked account guide
  • The account was deleted. Deleted accounts can't be restored
  • The Oversight Board window has closed. It's 15 days from the decision
  • You see an account at risk message instead. That's Instagram asking you to change a weak or exposed password, and it logs you out of other devices
  • Use a unique password of at least eight characters (Instagram's minimum is six), turn on two-factor authentication, and remove third-party apps you don't recognise
  • Check Account Status now and then, so you see warnings before they add up

Common questions

How long does an Instagram appeal take?

Instagram's disabled-account page doesn't say. For removed posts, it says a review can take up to 90 days, and the request may be closed before it's reviewed.

Why was my Instagram account disabled without warning?

Instagram says that in most cases you'll get a warning before losing access. Check Account Status for removed content and restrictions.

Can I get a deleted Instagram account back?

No. Instagram says there's no way to restore a deleted account. You can sign up again with the same email address, but may not get the same username.

Is there a deadline to appeal to the Oversight Board?

Yes, 15 days from when the decision was made, and only after Instagram has reviewed the content twice.

What's the difference between disabled and hacked?

A disabled account shows a message when you log in. If there's no message but you can't get in, someone may have taken over the account or you have a login issue.
