How to deactivate or delete your X (Twitter) account

• Deactivating is the first step to deletion. Your username and public profile stop being viewable on x.com and in the apps
• Deactivation lasts 30 days. Logging in during that window reactivates the account
• If you don't log in within 30 days, X deletes the account. You can't reactivate it or get old posts back
• Once deleted, your username is available for other accounts to register

Our view: if you only want a new name, change your username instead. Deleting a business account frees your handle for anyone, including impersonators.

• Download your X archive first. X says you need to request it before you deactivate
• Cancel paid subscriptions bought through the app, such as X Premium. They stay active after deactivation; subscriptions bought on X.com cancel automatically
• Expect mentions to stay. Other people's posts that mention your username remain, but no longer link to your profile
• Deleting your account doesn't remove your information from search engines such as Google or Bing; you'd need to contact them
• X may keep some information about a deactivated account for safety and security

On x.com:

1. Select the More icon, then Settings and privacy.
2. In the Your account tab, select Deactivate your account.
3. Read the deactivation information, then select Deactivate.
4. Enter your password and select Deactivate account to confirm.

• On iPhone: navigation menu, Settings and privacy, Your account, Deactivate your account, then Deactivate, your password and Yes, deactivate
• On Android: navigation menu or profile icon, Settings and privacy, Account, Deactivate your account, then the same confirmation steps

The username and email address of a deactivated account stay tied to it for 30 days, then become available for another account.

1. Within 30 days of deactivating, go to x.com or open the X app.
2. Log in with your username and password.
3. Confirm you want to reactivate when X asks.
4. You land on your Home timeline. Posts, followers and likes can take a while to fully return.

• It keeps reactivating: a third-party app you authorised may be logging in for you, and any login reactivates the account. Revoke third-party app access
• You don't have your password: reset it first
• You've lost the account's email address: contact your email provider. X will only deactivate at the request of the confirmed account holder, from the confirmed email or verified phone number
• The account is locked or suspended: X asks you to submit a request to deactivate it
• You're trying to fix a problem: X says deactivating and reactivating won't fix missing posts, wrong follower counts, suspicious messages or a compromised account
