To create a Facebook business Page, log in to Facebook, click Pages on the left, click Create Page, choose Public Page and click Next, then click Get started. Add your Page name and category, an optional bio, and click Create Page. Then add contact details, location and hours, a profile picture, a cover photo and an action button. Do you need a Page, a group or pro mode?

Meta's advice is simple: if your goal is to represent a business, brand or product, create a Page. A Page gives you tools to manage and track engagement, and anyone can follow it. A group is for conversation about a shared interest among its members. Pro mode is a setting on your personal profile for people who want to share public updates as themselves.

You can't have a Page without a profile. Meta says you must have a profile to create a Page or help manage one.

What should you fill in first?

A new visitor decides in seconds whether you're a real, open business. Fill in the parts that answer that question:

  • Name: your business's real trading name, the one on your sign or invoices.
  • Category: the closest match to what you sell, so people searching Facebook can find you.
  • Contact details, location and opening hours: the most-checked information on any local business Page.
  • Action button: point it at the one thing you want visitors to do, such as call, message or book.
  • Bio: one plain sentence on what you do and for whom.

What size should the profile picture and cover photo be?

Meta's own figures: the profile picture is cropped to a circle and should be 320 x 320 pixels for best quality. The cover photo must be at least 400 x 150 pixels and loads fastest as an sRGB JPG that's 851 x 315 pixels and under 100 KB. Meta suggests PNG for logos or text, and warns that the profile picture covers part of the cover photo's left-hand side.

How do you set your Page's username?

A username gives your Page a short web address (facebook.com/yourname) that's easy to print on a menu or a van. Meta says newly created Pages may not be able to create a username straight away, and a Page's username can be removed for inactivity. If yours is taken, try adding your town or trade. Meta's steps:

  1. Click your profile photo in the top right, click See all profiles and select your Page.
  2. Click your Page's profile picture in the top right, then Settings and privacy, then Settings.
  3. In the left menu, click Page setup, then Name, then Edit next to your username.
  4. Enter a username and, if it's available, click Save changes.

Who can help you manage the Page?

Don't share your Facebook password. Give people their own access instead. Facebook access lets someone switch into the Page and manage it on Facebook, with full or partial control. Task access lets someone manage content, messages, ads or insights from Meta Business Suite without switching into the Page. Our guide to adding an admin to a Facebook Page has the steps.

If you plan to run the Page as a business for years, add it to a business portfolio so the business, not one person's profile, owns it. Our business portfolio guide shows how.

What should you post first?

An empty Page looks closed. Before you invite anyone, publish a handful of posts so visitors see a working business:

  1. A welcome post: who you are, what you sell and where to find you.
  2. Two or three photos of your real products, premises or team.
  3. One post answering the question customers ask most.
  4. Then pick a pace you can keep, such as two or three posts a week, and plan them ahead.

Keeping the new Page active with Zolyp

Zolyp is our product, so weigh this section with that in mind. Setting up a Page takes an afternoon; keeping it posting every week is the harder part. Zolyp publishes to Facebook Pages, and it keeps each Facebook caption within 5,000 characters.

Zolyp plans the week across your content themes, writes the captions and designs the visuals against your Brand Brain (your tone, colours and rules, saved once), then schedules and publishes to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Threads. You review and approve the week, and Autopilot lets you hand off publishing theme by theme once you trust the output. Plans that create the posts start at $29 a month, with a 3-day free trial and no card required.

Common questions

Is a Facebook business Page free?

Yes. Creating and posting on a Page costs nothing. You only pay if you choose to run ads or boost posts.

Can I create a Facebook Page without a personal profile?

No. Meta says you must have a profile to create a Page or help manage one. The Page still posts under its own name, separate from your profile.

Should I use a Page or pro mode for my business?

Meta's guidance is to create a Page if your goal is to represent a business, brand or product. Pro mode is for sharing public updates from your own profile.

Can I change my Page name later?

Yes, Meta has a separate process to change a Page's name from Page setup in your Page's settings. Pick a name you won't want to change, as it's how customers search for you.
