Facebook image sizes: the figures Meta publishes

Meta's own figures: a Page profile picture should be 320 x 320 pixels and is cropped to a circle. A Page cover photo must be at least 400 x 150 pixels and loads fastest as an 851 x 315 pixel sRGB JPG under 100 KB. For feed images, Meta's Ads Guide recommends 4:5 at 1440 x 1800 pixels, and Meta recommends 1080p for reels.

Facebook image sizes at a glance

Plenty of size charts online repeat numbers nobody can trace. This one only lists figures Meta publishes, with the page each comes from. Where Meta gives no number, we say so.

What size is a Facebook Page profile picture?

Upload a square image of 320 x 320 pixels. Meta says it displays at 176 x 176 pixels on your Page on computers, 196 x 196 pixels on smartphones and 36 x 36 pixels on most feature phones, and it's cropped to a circle.

Keep your logo or face inside the central circle, with some space around it, so nothing important gets clipped. Meta suggests PNG for a logo or text, which tends to stay sharper than JPG.

What size is a Facebook Page cover photo?

The minimum is 400 x 150 pixels. Meta says a cover photo loads fastest as an sRGB JPG that's 851 x 315 pixels and under 100 KB.

The tricky part is that the cover is shown at different shapes: Meta describes a 16:9 ratio on computers and 2.4:1 on mobile, left-aligned. The profile picture covers part of the left-hand side, overlapping by about 40 pixels on mobile, and the image may be cropped and resized for different screens. Put text and faces towards the centre, and check the result on your phone and a computer after uploading.

To change it, switch into your Page, click your Page name in the left menu, click Edit cover photo at the bottom right of the cover, then Upload Photo. Drag the image up or down to reposition it and click Save changes. All cover photos are public.

What size should feed images be?

Meta's Facebook help pages don't give one recommended size for an ordinary Page post photo. The closest official figure is Meta's Ads Guide for image ads in Facebook Feed, which recommends a 4:5 ratio at 1440 x 1800 pixels, JPG or PNG. Its technical requirements for those ads are a minimum width of 600 pixels and a maximum file size of 30 MB.

Those are ad specs, but an organic post sits in the same Feed, so a 4:5 portrait image is a sensible default: it takes up more of a phone screen than a square or landscape photo. Square (1:1) works well too, and is easier to reuse on other platforms.

What size should reels and video be?

Meta's Reels requirements recommend MP4 at 1080p, 24 to 60 frames per second, with H.264 or H.265 video. Meta says reels can be any length or orientation, and since June 2025 every video posted to Facebook is shared as a reel. Its reel tips recommend vertical video and say horizontal reels, blurry low-resolution video, borders and watermarks from other apps make a reel less discoverable.

In practice that means shooting vertical at 1080 x 1920 pixels (9:16) for reels, which is what fills a phone screen.

What about Stories, events and group covers?

We couldn't find a published image size for Facebook Stories, event covers or group covers on Meta's help pages when we checked. Stories fill a vertical phone screen, so a 9:16 vertical image is the safe choice. For event and group covers, upload a large landscape image, keep text away from the edges, and preview it before you publish.

Tips that save a re-upload

A few habits avoid blurry or badly cropped images:

  • Upload larger than the display size, never smaller; Facebook scales down well and up badly.
  • Use PNG for logos and images with text, JPG for photos (both Meta's suggestions).
  • Keep important content in the middle of any image that gets cropped.
  • Check every new cover and profile picture on a phone, where most people will see it.

How Zolyp sizes Facebook images

Zolyp is our product, so weigh this section with that in mind. Zolyp designs Facebook feed posts at 1080 x 1350 pixels (4:5 portrait) by default, with square and landscape available, and checks each photo against the Facebook limits its publishing path enforces: up to 4 MB per photo in a post and 10 MB in a Story, and up to 10 photos in one Zolyp post.

Zolyp plans the week across your content themes, writes the captions and designs the visuals against your Brand Brain (your tone, colours and rules, saved once), then schedules and publishes to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Threads. You review and approve the week, and Autopilot lets you hand off publishing theme by theme once you trust the output. Plans that create the posts start at $29 a month, with a 3-day free trial and no card required.
