What's the difference between a TikTok username and nickname?

Your account has both, and they follow different rules. The username is your @handle and makes up your profile link. The nickname is the name people see across TikTok, such as in the For You feed, comments and direct messages.

What are TikTok's username rules?

Before you pick a new handle, check it against these rules from TikTok's help centre:

  • 2 to 24 characters.
  • Letters, numbers, underscores and full stops only, and no full stop at the end.
  • It must be available. A name may be taken, or claimed by a suspended or deactivated account and not available straight away.
  • If you give up a username, you can't add it back to an account for a short period, so don't release a handle you may want again.
  • Your profile link changes with it, so update the old link anywhere you've shared it.

How do you change your TikTok nickname?

If you only want to change the name people see, change the nickname instead and keep your handle and profile link.

  1. In the TikTok app, tap Profile at the bottom.
  2. Tap Edit profile, then Name.
  3. Enter your new nickname (up to 30 characters). It must follow TikTok's Community Guidelines.
  4. Tap Save. You can change it again after 7 days.

Why can't you change your TikTok username?

If none of these apply, try the other route: the app if you used the website, or the website if you used the app.

  • You changed it in the last 30 days.
  • The name breaks a rule: too short or long, a character other than letters, numbers, underscores or full stops, or a full stop at the end.
  • The name is unavailable, because it's taken or held by a suspended or deactivated account.
  • Your account is blocked from updating its profile.
  • You're using TikTok Mobile Web, where the feature isn't available.
  • Your account is verified: TikTok asks verified accounts to contact it to change the username.
