What do Meta's rules say about giveaways?

The Promotions section of Meta's policies for Pages, groups and events says that if you run a contest, giveaway or sweepstakes:

  • It must meet the legal and regulatory requirements where you run it, for example providing official rules, disclosing offer terms and eligibility, and registering it with authorities if required.
  • Entrants must fully release Meta and hold it harmless from liability.
  • Entrants must acknowledge the promotion isn't sponsored, endorsed, administered by or associated with Meta.
  • It must not require or incentivise people to share, repost, tag others or otherwise publicise it.
  • Meta won't help you administer it, and you run it at your own risk.

Which entry methods are off limits?

Share to enter, tag a friend to enter and extra entries for reposts all break the rule against requiring or incentivising people to publicise your promotion. Separately, Meta's engagement bait guideline covers posts that explicitly ask for votes, shares, comments, tags, likes or other reactions, so heavy "comment to win" wording may also be seen as bait.

  • Paid entry is a different problem: Meta's policy treats games where something of monetary value is needed to play and to win, such as raffles and lotteries, as gambling, which needs Meta's prior written permission.

How do you set up a giveaway that follows the rules?

A simple order of work:

  1. Check the law where your entrants live, including whether the promotion must be registered.
  2. Write official rules: who can enter, the dates, the prize, how and when the winner is picked and how they'll be contacted.
  3. Add the two statements Meta requires: a full release of Meta from liability, and that the promotion isn't sponsored, endorsed, administered by or associated with Meta.
  4. Choose an entry method that doesn't involve sharing or tagging, such as a form on your website.
  5. Post the giveaway on your Page with a link to the rules, and pin it while it runs.
  6. Pick and contact the winner as your rules say, then announce it.

What about collecting entrants' details?

If you collect information from people who interact with your Page, Meta's policy says you must tell them first, get their explicit consent to use their data, and make clear that you, not Meta, are collecting it.

What are the common mistakes?

Check your post against these before publishing:

  • Asking people to share the post or tag friends to enter or get extra entries.
  • No official rules, or rules missing the Meta release and non-affiliation statements.
  • Charging for entry, which can turn a prize draw into gambling under Meta's policy.
  • Collecting emails or phone numbers without saying who's collecting them and getting consent.
  • Expecting Meta to help pick a winner or settle a dispute. It won't.

Planning the posts around a giveaway

Zolyp is our product, so weigh this section with that in mind. A giveaway needs a launch post, reminders and a winner announcement. Zolyp can plan and write those into your week; the rules, entry method and prize draw stay with you.

Zolyp plans the week across your content themes, writes the captions and designs the visuals against your Brand Brain (your tone, colours and rules, saved once), then schedules and publishes to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Threads. You review and approve the week, and Autopilot lets you hand off publishing theme by theme once you trust the output. Plans that create the posts start at $29 a month, with a 3-day free trial and no card required.

Common questions

Can I ask people to share my post to enter a Facebook giveaway?

No. Meta's Page policies say a promotion must not require or incentivise participants to share, repost, tag others or otherwise publicise it.

Can I run a tag-a-friend contest on Facebook?

No. Tagging others to enter, or for extra entries, is one of the things Meta's policy rules out.

Do I need official rules for a Facebook giveaway?

Meta says your promotion must meet legal requirements, with providing entrants a copy of the official rules as an example, and must include a release of Meta and a non-affiliation statement.

Can I sell raffle tickets on my Facebook Page?

Not without permission. Meta treats raffles and lotteries where you pay to play for a prize of monetary value as gambling, which needs its prior written permission.

Will Facebook help me pick a winner?

No. Meta says it won't assist you in administering a promotion.
