How does TikTok decide what to show in search?
TikTok's help centre explains search separately from the For You feed, and the difference matters. On the For You feed, interactions such as watch time are generally weighted most. In search, TikTok says content information, which may include how well the content matches the specific term entered, is generally weighted more heavily for most users.
In practice, that means a small account can rank in search for a specific question if its video is the clearest match, even without a history of popular videos. It also means vague videos struggle: a clip titled "Tuesday vibes" matches nothing anyone types.
Location is part of the picture too. TikTok lists the searcher's location among the user information it uses, so local phrases such as a service plus your town are worth testing if your customers are nearby.
- TikTok's search also recommends search terms to people, so a phrase that matches a common search can be suggested before someone finishes typing.
| Signal group | What TikTok lists for search |
|---|---|
| Content information (weighted most for most users) | How well the content matches the search, hashtags and the sound used |
| User interactions | The searcher's past searches, and content they like, share, comment on, watch in full or skip |
| User information | Device settings, language preference and location |

How do you find what people search for on TikTok?
Start with TikTok's own data, then add the words your customers use:
Aim for specific questions rather than one-word topics. "Cake" is a topic thousands of creators cover; "how far ahead to order a wedding cake" is a question a small bakery can answer better than almost anyone.
- In the TikTok app, tap Search, type "Creator Search Insights" and tap View.
- Browse topics, or type your product or service into its search bar.
- Use the Content gap filter to find topics that may be short of videos. Those are easier to rank for.
- Tap a topic to see its search popularity and related topics, and save the useful ones as favourites.
- Once you have more than 1,000 followers, use the Searches by followers filter to see what your own audience looks for.
- Type your main service into the normal TikTok search bar and note the suggested searches it offers.
- Add the exact questions customers ask you in person. Their wording is often the search term.

Where should the search phrase go in your video?
TikTok doesn't publish which parts of a video it reads when judging a match, so put the phrase everywhere a viewer would naturally see or hear it. That helps both people and search:
Use the phrase the way a person would say it, not as a list of keywords. "How to bleed a radiator" works as a spoken first line, a text overlay and a caption all at once.
Your profile helps too. A bio that says plainly what you do and where, such as "Plumber in Leeds, boilers and leaks", tells anyone who taps through from search that they've found the right kind of business.
- Say it in your first sentence: "Here's how to remove a red wine stain from carpet."
- Show it as on-screen text in the opening seconds.
- Write a clear caption that uses the phrase. TikTok's Creator Academy advises clear descriptions so viewers understand the video quickly.
- Add 2 to 3 relevant hashtags. That is the number TikTok's Creator Academy recommends, with relevance over volume.
- Pick a sound that suits the video; TikTok lists the sound used among the search signals. If you're a business, use the Commercial Music Library.

What makes your video the best answer?
Matching the words gets you into the results. Holding the viewer is what keeps you there. A searcher wants an answer, so give it early and plainly.
Think in clusters rather than single videos. One customer problem usually leads to several follow-up questions. Answer each in its own video and mention the next one at the end ("Next: what to do if that doesn't work"), so a viewer who arrives from search has a reason to stay on your profile.
- Answer the question in the first few seconds, then explain.
- Show, don't just say: the stain coming out, the setting on the screen, the finished result.
- Make one video per question rather than one video covering five.
- Take the time the answer needs. TikTok's Creator Academy suggests longer videos for things like tutorials, while still hooking viewers within the first 5 seconds.
- Add on-screen text or auto captions so the answer works on mute.

How do you track your TikTok search performance?
Creator Search Insights has its own analytics for how your posts perform in TikTok search:
- In the TikTok app, go to Creator Search Insights.
- Tap Analytics.
- Tap All posts for the overall picture, or Inspired posts for videos you made from topics found in Creator Search Insights.
- Review it monthly. Topics that bring search views deserve a follow-up video answering the next question.
- Note that TikTok says some topics in Creator Search Insights are AI-generated and may not always be accurate, so sense-check a topic before you film it.
- Compare search views with the questions customers ask in person. Where they overlap, you have found phrases worth a whole series.

What hurts your visibility in TikTok search?
TikTok says that if you repeatedly post content that is unsuitable for the For You feed, your account and posts won't appear there and will be harder to find in search. If that happens, you'll get a notice in your inbox and on your profile, and you can appeal from either.
Beyond the rules, a few habits work against you:
- Stuffing captions with every keyword you can think of. It reads badly and doesn't describe the video.
- Using popular hashtags that have nothing to do with the video.
- Chasing big generic terms when a specific local or niche phrase is what your customers type.
- A slow opening, so searchers leave before the answer.

Worked example (hypothetical): a plumber's TikTok search plan
This plan is invented to show the method. A plumber lists questions customers ask, checks them in Creator Search Insights and turns each into one video:
- Each video says the phrase in its first sentence and uses it in the caption with 2 to 3 relevant hashtags.
- After a month, the plumber checks search analytics in Creator Search Insights and films follow-ups for the phrases that brought views.
| Search phrase | Video | On-screen text |
|---|---|---|
| how to bleed a radiator | Bleeding a radiator in under a minute, with the key shown up close | How to bleed a radiator |
| why is my boiler pressure low | The two common causes and the one you can check yourself | Boiler pressure low? Check this |
| how to fix a dripping tap | Changing a tap washer, start to finish | Fix a dripping tap |
| emergency plumber cost | What a call-out includes, line by line | What an emergency plumber costs |

Common questions
What is TikTok SEO?
It's the practice of making TikTok videos that match what people search for in the app, so they appear in TikTok search results as well as the For You feed.
Do hashtags help TikTok SEO?
TikTok lists hashtags among the content information it uses for search. Its Creator Academy recommends 2 to 3 relevant hashtags per video, not long lists.
How do I see what people search for on TikTok?
Search the TikTok app for "Creator Search Insights" and tap View. You can browse popular topics, use the Content gap filter and see each topic's search popularity.
Can I see how my videos perform in TikTok search?
Yes. In Creator Search Insights, tap Analytics to see how your posts perform in search, for all posts or for those inspired by topics you found there.
Is TikTok SEO different from Google SEO?
The idea is similar: match what people search and answer it well. On TikTok the answer is a video, so the phrase should be spoken and shown on screen as well as written.
How long does it take to rank in TikTok search?
TikTok doesn't say. Check search analytics in Creator Search Insights after a few weeks of posting answers, and make follow-up videos for the phrases that start bringing views.
