What is the TikTok Events API?

The Events API is a connection between your marketing data and TikTok across web, app and offline channels. The Pixel runs in the visitor's browser, so connection problems and browser differences can stop some conversions reaching TikTok. The Events API reports those, which TikTok says improves measurement, optimisation and targeting.

  • You need the Pixel or the Events API before you can use the Web Conversions objective in Ads Manager.
  • You choose which data you share, so you only send what your marketing needs.
  • For websites, TikTok recommends using both the Pixel and the Events API, with deduplication.

How do you set up the TikTok Events API?

TikTok's getting-started steps:

  1. Agree with your marketing, legal and technical people which data you'll share.
  2. Pick the events, parameters and match keys that fit your goals.
  3. Choose an integration method: a commerce partner such as Shopify or WooCommerce, a data partner such as a customer data platform, tag manager or CRM, or a direct API integration.
  4. Decide whether the Events API runs on its own or as a second channel with your Pixel. TikTok recommends the second.
  5. Have your legal team review TikTok's privacy and data terms.
  6. Plan a timeline for approvals and setup, then connect it through the partner or your developers.
  7. Check the setup with the Diagnostics tools in TikTok Events Manager.
  • Direct integrations need an access token to authenticate Events API 2.0 calls. TikTok's developer portal explains the two ways to generate one.

How do deduplication and match keys work?

If the Pixel and Events API both send the same event, such as Purchase, TikTok needs to know they're one conversion. Send the same event_id through both, and TikTok keeps the first copy. Deduplication isn't needed if each channel sends different events, for example AddToCart through the Pixel and Purchase through the API.

  • Pixel to Pixel or API to API: duplicates with the same event and event_id within 48 hours are removed.
  • Pixel and API: matching events are merged when they arrive after 5 minutes and within 48 hours of the first.
  • Match keys help TikTok link events to ads: click ID, hashed email and phone, hashed external ID, IP address and user agent, and the first-party ttp cookie.
  • IP address and user agent are shared by default for the Pixel but need manual setup for the Events API.

How do you check your Events API setup is working?

Use Diagnostics in TikTok Events Manager:

  1. In TikTok Ads Manager, open Tools and click Events to enter Events Manager.
  2. Check the Diagnostics section on the home page for issues across all your pixels.
  3. Or click a pixel under Datasets Overview and open its Diagnostics tab. A number next to the tab means there's an active issue.
  4. Click an issue's Learn more for impact, fix instructions and sample affected events.
  • Conversions counted twice usually means the Pixel and Events API aren't sending the same event_id.
  • Low match rates: add more match keys, and configure IP address and user agent for the Events API.

Common questions

Do I need both the TikTok Pixel and the Events API?

You need at least one for Web Conversions campaigns. For websites, TikTok recommends both together, with event deduplication.

Does Shopify support the TikTok Events API?

Yes. TikTok's partner list shows Shopify supports both the Pixel and the Events API.

Do I need a developer to set up the Events API?

Not always. TikTok says partner integrations often need no code changes. A direct API integration does need technical work and an access token.

What is event_id in the TikTok Events API?

It's the identifier TikTok uses to spot duplicate events. Send the same event_id through the Pixel and the Events API so one conversion isn't counted twice.
