How does TikTok decide which ads to show?

TikTok ranks ads by how much advertisers bid and how relevant each ad is to the person watching. A higher bid can help you reach more people, but relevance counts too. Your bid strategy tells TikTok how to bid for you, and you set it in the bidding and optimisation section of the ad group.

What's the difference between TikTok's bid strategies?

TikTok Ads Manager offers two bid strategies:

  • Target cost per result is the default for the reach and video views objectives.
  • In Conversions campaigns, Target cost per result is only available when the optimisation goal is Conversion.
  • Names vary between TikTok pages: the Smart+ Traffic page lists Maximum Delivery and Cost Cap as its bid strategies.

Which TikTok bid strategy should you choose?

Start with two questions TikTok suggests: what is a new customer worth to you, and how much will you pay to get one? The second answer is your target cost per acquisition. Then:

  • Conversion campaigns: TikTok recommends Maximum Results to use all of your daily budget.
  • Other auction campaigns: use Target cost per result with the suggested bid to control your daily cost per result.
  • App installs: optimise for an in-app event and set your bid as your target CPA.
  • Bidding for clicks gets the most impressions for your budget. Bidding for conversions gets the most actions on your website or app.

How much daily budget does a TikTok ad group need?

TikTok's formula is: ad group daily budget = target CPA x 10. For example, if you're happy to pay $20 per sale, start with $200 a day for that ad group. TikTok's page gives this as the budget needed to get through the learning phase, though it mentions both 10 and 50 conversions in the same paragraph.

What is the TikTok learning phase?

The learning phase is when TikTok's system works out who responds best to a new campaign. Performance can swing during it, and Conversions campaigns may see high CPMs. TikTok says volatility usually starts to drop after about 25 results or 7 days.

  1. Set a realistic budget before launch, using the CPA x 10 formula.
  2. Don't pause the campaign or ad group while it's learning.
  3. Avoid edits that restart the learning phase.
  4. Keep your budget and number of creatives reasonable.
  5. Judge results after about 25 results or 7 days, not on day one.

Why is your TikTok cost per result higher than your bid?

Common reasons:

  • Still in the learning phase: costs fluctuate until the system finds the right people.
  • Target cost per result is an average, so single days can land above or below it.
  • Maximum Results doesn't aim at a target CPA at all, so costs move with the auction.
  • Recent edits restarted learning. Let the ad group run without big changes.

Where Zolyp fits (from the team behind this guide)

Zolyp, which publishes this guide, is an AI social media manager: it plans, writes, designs and schedules posts for Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Threads, and you approve the week before anything goes out. It doesn't set ad bids. A good organic post is often the best candidate to promote, so it helps to see which posts already perform before you spend.
