How to link your Instagram account to Pinterest

Linking does three things, according to Pinterest:

• Pins other people make from your Instagram content are credited to you, with a link to your profile and a follow button
• Auto-publish can turn each new Instagram post into a Pin
• With a Pinterest business account, you get analytics on those Pins

Check these before you start:

• An Instagram professional account. If yours is personal, Pinterest prompts you to convert it
• A public Instagram account
• On a Pinterest business account, only the primary account holder can link
• The feature isn't available in every country

On a computer:

1. Log in to Pinterest and click the more-options icon at the bottom left. On a business account, use the arrow-down icon at the top right.
2. Click Settings, then Link to Pinterest in the side menu.
3. Click the arrow next to Instagram.
4. Log in to Instagram in the pop-up and click Allow.
5. Choose a board. Pinterest creates one called Social by default, which you can change later.
6. Choose how many past posts to import: the last 90, 180 or 365 days (365 is the default).
7. Click Next to finish.

• In the app: tap your profile picture, then your profile photo at the top left (or the ellipsis icon on a business account), tap Link to Pinterest, then Link, log in to Instagram and tap Allow

Auto-publish switches on as soon as you link. Then:

• Each new Instagram post creates a new Pin, which can take up to 24 hours to appear
• Importing past posts can take up to 72 hours
• Up to 150 Instagram posts a day can be imported
• Every post goes to the same board. To change it, go to Settings and select Claimed accounts
• If you've claimed a website, the Pin's Visit Site button goes there, and each description links back to the Instagram post
• Unlicensed music in Instagram posts is muted on Pinterest

Not every Instagram post suits Pinterest. You can filter or stop it:

1. To skip certain posts, on a computer open Import content, click Manage, and under Account Claiming Settings enter a word, phrase or hashtag and press Enter. Posts with it in the caption aren't imported.
2. To stop auto-publishing without unlinking, go to Settings, select Import content, click Manage next to Instagram and switch it off. Posts made while it's off won't be imported later.
3. To unlink completely, select Unclaim. New Pins stop, but existing Pins stay until you delete them.

Pinterest's troubleshooting steps:

• Can't connect at all: check you have a professional account and that it's public. If it still fails, the feature may not be available in your country
• An error about Meta activity or data sharing: turn Activity off Meta back on in your Meta account settings (it used to be called off-Facebook activity), then try again in Pinterest
• Older posts are missing: Pinterest's page also says only posts less than 90 days old can be imported, which is stricter than the 365-day import option. Upload older images or videos directly
• Pins with licensed music stay up after you turn auto-publish off: delete or edit them yourself if needed
