What's the difference between a LinkedIn post and an article?

A post is what you share in the feed, up to 3,000 characters. An article is long-form writing with its own title, cover image and web address, built for in-depth insight. Articles appear in the Activity section of your profile. A newsletter is a series of articles that people subscribe to.

LinkedIn's own advice: if a post runs past 3,000 characters, write an article instead. Use posts for quick updates and articles for guides, explanations and opinions you want people to find later.

What can you add to a LinkedIn article?

The editor is more flexible than a post. LinkedIn lists:

  • Images and video from the Media icon. Article images can be JPG, static GIF or PNG, up to 10 MB each.
  • Links, code snippets, lists, quotes and dividers.
  • Embeds: a LinkedIn post, profile or Page, or external content. Other LinkedIn articles can't be embedded.
  • Mentions: type @ to mention a member or Page. They're notified and linked.
  • Cover image: LinkedIn's publishing FAQ gives 2000 x 600 pixels as optimal, while its Page article steps recommend 1920 x 1080. Keep key text near the centre so either crop works.
  • SEO title (cut off after 60 characters) and SEO description (LinkedIn suggests 140 to 160 characters).
  • After publishing, you can turn comments off, edit or delete the article at any time.

Where Zolyp fits

Zolyp, which publishes this guide, is our own product, so weigh this section with that in mind. Zolyp writes and schedules LinkedIn posts rather than articles. A practical pairing is to publish the article yourself, then have Zolyp turn its main points into short posts over the following weeks. LinkedIn is one of the 9 platforms it publishes to (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Threads), and you approve the week before anything goes live. Plans that create the posts start at $29 a month, with a 3-day free trial.

When should I write an article instead of a post?

When you need more than 3,000 characters, or want a titled piece people can find and share later. LinkedIn itself suggests an article for anything over the post limit.
