What is a passkey on X?
A passkey lets you log in without typing your password. X says passkeys use public key cryptography from the WebAuthn standard: your device creates a key pair, X stores the public key, and the private key never leaves your device. Because the passkey is never shared with X, it's less exposed to phishing.

What if you lose your phone or share the account?
Keep a strong password even with a passkey set up, since it remains your fallback. Two-factor authentication is a separate setting under the same Security menu.
- Lost or stolen phone: X says the account stays secure and you can still log in with your password
- On Apple devices, passkeys sync through iCloud Keychain to devices signed in to the same iCloud account. X says that if you lose all your devices, they can be recovered through iCloud Keychain escrow
- Sharing: you can't share a passkey without sharing the iCloud account. For several people managing one business account, X points to its Delegate feature

Why can't you use a passkey on X?
- You're signing up: X says you can't yet create a new account with a passkey instead of a password
- You're on another kind of device: X lists passkey support for iOS and Android
- The option isn't where you expect: look under Security and account access, Security, Additional password protection
- You forgot your password and need it to add a passkey: reset the password first

Common questions
Is a passkey required to log in to X?
No. X encourages passkeys for security but says they aren't required.
Which devices support X passkeys?
X says passkeys are available on iOS and Android.
Does X ever see my passkey?
No. X stores only the public key. The private key stays on your device.
What if I lose the phone with my passkey?
You can still log in with your password, and on Apple devices the passkey syncs through iCloud Keychain.
Is a passkey the same as two-factor authentication?
No. A passkey replaces typing your password; two-factor authentication adds a second check after you log in. X keeps them as separate settings.
