How to send and manage messages on Pinterest

On a computer:

1. Log in and click the dialog-ellipsis icon.
2. Click the compose icon at the top right.
3. Search your contacts and select up to 10 people.
4. Write your message where it says Send a message. Use the plus icon to add ideas (Pins).
5. Click the airplane icon to send.

• On iOS: tap the dialog-ellipsis icon at the bottom, pick a person or tap the pencil icon to search by name or email, tap Next, write your message and tap Send
• On Android: tap the dialog-ellipsis icon, tap the new message box where it says Type a message, and tap the airplane icon to send
• Teen accounts have limited messaging options

Sharing a Pin is the most common reason to message on Pinterest. On a computer:

1. Open the Pin, board or profile.
2. Click the share icon (to the right of a Pin, above a board's Pins, or at the top of a profile).
3. Search by name or email, or pick a suggested person.
4. Select your recipients and click Send.

• In the app, the share icon also lets you copy a link or send through another app
• On iOS you can select several Pins at once. Recipients can vote for the ones they like, and you can see the votes
• When a Pin, board or text is shared in a message, you can start a separate replies thread about it. Pinterest says replies are app-only for now

Business accounts opt in. Once you do, a message button appears on your profile and messages arrive in your Pinterest inbox. On a computer:

1. Log in to your business account and click the chevron-down icon at the top right.
2. Click Settings, then Social permissions on the left.
3. Under Messages, select Allow others to message my business.
4. Click Save.

• In the app: tap your profile picture, the ellipsis icon, Settings, then Social permissions (Social permissions and activity on iOS), and switch on Send and receive messages from your business profile
• To show a phone number or email on your profile too, go to Settings, Public profile, add them and save
• Switching messages off later stops new message requests and conversations

Pinterest sorts people into groups such as followers, collaborators and people you follow, and you pick one setting for each: Inbox, Requests (you accept or deny) or Don't deliver. On a computer:

1. Click the more-options icon at the bottom left and select Settings.
2. Select Social permissions.
3. Under Messages, click Edit next to a group.
4. Choose Inbox, Requests or Don't deliver, then click Save.

• In the app: open your settings, tap Social permissions (Social permissions and activity on iOS), then Message settings, and choose a setting for each group
• To stop one person entirely, block them

Pinterest's options for tidying up or dealing with problem messages:

• Hide: open the conversation, click the ellipsis icon at the top right and select Hide conversation. To bring it back, open the person's profile, select Message and send a new message
• Delete a message: on a computer, click the ellipsis icon next to it and select Delete. On mobile, press and hold the message and tap Delete
• Report: open the conversation, click the ellipsis icon at the top right, choose a reason and confirm with Report
• Can't find the reply option on a computer? Pinterest says replies to shared Pins currently need the app
• Not getting business messages? Check that messaging is switched on and that your message settings don't send that group to Don't deliver
