How to turn off, filter and manage comments on Pinterest

For a single Pin on a computer:

1. Open the Pin.
2. Click the ellipsis icon.
3. Switch off Allow people to comment.
4. Click Save.

• In the app: open the Pin, tap the ellipsis icon and switch off Allow comments. Changes save automatically
• On a business account, you can also do it from the engagement tab by clicking the edit icon on a published Pin

Pinterest says this setting is only available on iOS, and is switched off for anyone under 18. On a computer, you'll need an iPhone or iPad to change it.

1. Open the Pinterest app on iOS and go to Settings.
2. Tap Social permissions (or Social permissions and activity).
3. Switch off Allow comments on your Pins.

If you want conversation but not certain words, filters are a better fit than switching comments off. On a computer:

1. Click your profile picture, then Settings.
2. Select Social permissions.
3. Switch on Filter comments on my Pins, Filter comments on others' Pins, or both.
4. Under Blocked words, add words or phrases separated by commas.
5. Click Save. In the app, the same options are under Social permissions in Settings.

Business accounts can handle comments and mentions on their Pins in one place. Pinterest says it's on desktop only, and needs a claimed website or published content on your profile.

1. Log in to your business account and click the megaphone icon at the top right.
2. Select a comment or mention on the left; it opens in the centre.
3. React or reply, or use the ellipsis menu to Highlight, Delete or Report this content.
4. Use Remove @mention or Block user where needed, and mark items as read or unread as you go.

• Comments can be up to 500 characters and can only include Pinterest links
• You can mention up to 5 people in a comment
• To delete a comment straight from a Pin, click the ellipsis icon below it and select Delete

Pinterest turns comments off itself in some cases:

• Comments are off by default for people under 18, who can turn them on per Pin
• Pins that may contain unsafe or sensitive content, such as images of minors or adult content, have comments switched off, and they can't be turned back on
• Pins suspected of breaking the Community Guidelines keep comments off
• You can't comment on someone else's Pin if they've blocked you, switched comments off, or you've broken the Community Guidelines
• To report an abusive comment, click the ellipsis icon under it and choose Report this content. For an intellectual property claim about a photo comment, contact Pinterest with the Pin URL and the commenter's username
