What does a private profile do, and who can use one?

Pinterest's rules:

  • A private profile controls who can see your profile, boards and Pins
  • It won't appear in Pinterest search results or in search engines, but you can invite people you know to follow you
  • Business profiles are always public. You'd need to convert to a personal account to make the profile private
  • Profiles for teens aged 13 to 16 are private by default and can't be made public. You must be 16 or over to change profile visibility

What can a business account keep private?

A business profile stays public, but you still have options:

  • Private boards: save Pins to a board that only you and anyone you invite can see. Useful for planning campaigns or collecting ideas before launch
  • Search privacy: hides your profile and boards from search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo. The setting is available on business accounts too, but for most businesses being found is the point, so think twice
  • Ads personalisation: under Privacy and data you can choose how Pinterest uses your activity for ads, such as info from sites you visit and partner info

How do you turn on search privacy?

You must be at least 18. If your profile is private, search privacy is switched on automatically and can't be changed. On a computer:

  1. Click the more-options icon at the bottom left, then Settings.
  2. Click Profile visibility.
  3. Switch on the toggle next to Search privacy.
  4. Click I understand, then Save.
  • In the app: go to your settings (business accounts tap the ellipsis icon at the top right, then Settings), tap Profile visibility, switch on Search privacy and tap I understand. It saves automatically
  • Pinterest adds a tag asking search engines to exclude your profile and boards straight away, but pages already in search results may stay for a while. You can ask Google, Bing or Yahoo to remove them

How do you invite followers, and what can go wrong?

With a private profile, people can only follow you through your invite link. On a computer, open your profile, click Share, then Copy link and send it. In the app, open your profile, tap the share icon at the top right and tap Copy link.

  • Invite link stopped working: each link expires after three days or after five people use it. Copy a fresh one
  • No Private profile switch: you're on a business account, or you're under 16
  • Can't change search privacy: your profile is private, which turns it on automatically, or you're under 18
  • Profile still showing on Google: search privacy works going forward. Request removal from the search engine for older results

Common questions

Can I make my Pinterest business account private?

No. Business profiles are always public. Convert to a personal account first, or keep specific boards private instead.

Can people find my private Pinterest profile on Google?

Pinterest says private profiles don't appear in search engines. Results indexed earlier may take time to drop out, and you can request removal from the search engine.

How do people follow a private Pinterest profile?

Share your invite link from your profile. Each link expires after three days or after five people use it.

Why can't I make my Pinterest profile public?

Profiles for teens aged 13 to 16 are private by default and can't be made public. You must be 16 or over to change it.

Does search privacy hide my Pins on Pinterest itself?

No. Search privacy asks search engines like Google to exclude your profile and boards. A private profile is what hides you from Pinterest search.
