What does YouTube say helps a channel grow?

YouTube doesn't publish a growth formula, but it does explain what its systems look at. Recommendations take into account viewing behaviour, likes, dislikes, subscriptions and feedback, including satisfaction surveys. Search results are ranked on relevance, engagement and quality, and YouTube says the reputation and quality of a channel affect how its videos are surfaced.

Put simply, growth comes from viewers who choose your video, watch it, and are glad they did. The rest of this guide breaks that into things you can check and fix. Our guide to the YouTube algorithm goes deeper on the signals themselves.

For a business, that is good news. You don't need to chase trends or post every day. You need videos that answer real questions well, presented so the right people click, and connected so each one leads to the next. Work through the checks below in order, because a better opening can't help a video nobody clicks.

Are people choosing your videos? Check the packaging

Your title and thumbnail are the packaging. If YouTube shows a video often but few people click, the packaging is the problem, not the video. The Reach tab in YouTube Analytics shows impressions (how often your thumbnails were shown on YouTube) and impressions click-through rate (how often viewers watched after seeing a thumbnail).

  1. In YouTube Analytics, open the Reach tab and sort your recent videos by impressions.
  2. Find videos with plenty of impressions but a click-through rate well below your channel's usual level.
  3. Rewrite the title so it states the viewer's question or result in plain words. Video titles can be up to 100 characters, but the start matters most.
  4. Make the thumbnail readable on a phone: one subject, a few large words at most, strong contrast.
  5. Where you have access, use YouTube's Test and compare feature to try different versions rather than guessing.
  6. Check again after two weeks and keep what improved.

Are viewers staying? Fix the opening first

The opening is where most viewers decide. YouTube's audience retention report includes key moments, and one of them is the intro: the percentage of viewers still watching after the first 30 seconds. YouTube says a high figure suggests the opening matched what the title and thumbnail promised. Key moments appear on videos at least 60 seconds long with at least 100 views.

The report also marks top moments (where almost no one left), spikes (parts that were rewatched or shared) and dips (parts people skipped or where they stopped watching). YouTube suggests moving compelling content earlier if your top moments come late.

  • Cut logo animations and long greetings. Start with the question, the result or the problem.
  • Repeat the promise of the title in your first sentence so viewers know they're in the right place.
  • Show the finished result early, then explain how you got there.
  • Look at the dips: if viewers leave at the same kind of moment in several videos, change that habit.
  • Compare segments: the report can compare groups such as new and returning viewers or subscribers and non-subscribers, which shows whether newcomers leave sooner than regulars.

Is every viewer offered a next video?

A channel grows faster when one video leads to another. YouTube gives you four tools for this, and they cost nothing but a few minutes per upload.

ToolHow it worksRule to know
End screenClickable video, playlist or subscribe elements at the endVideo at least 25 seconds; added in the last 5 to 20 seconds; up to four elements on 16:9
Related video on a ShortA link below your handle in the Shorts playerNeeds advanced feature access; linked video must be public or unlisted
ChaptersLabelled sections viewers can jump betweenFirst timestamp 00:00, at least three timestamps, each chapter at least 10 seconds

How do you turn viewers into subscribers?

Subscribers matter because subscriptions are one of the things YouTube's recommendations consider, and subscribers are often among the first to see your next upload. But people subscribe to a promise of more useful videos, not to a business name.

  • Run a series. "Fix it Friday" or "Ask the pharmacist" gives people a reason to come back.
  • Ask once, at the right moment: just after you've delivered something useful, not in the first ten seconds.
  • Add a subscribe element to your end screen.
  • Set up a channel trailer for people who visit your channel page without subscribing.
  • Reply to comments in the first day after posting; it shows new viewers that someone is there.

Should you collaborate with other channels?

Yes, if the other channel serves the same kind of customer without competing with you. YouTube's Collaborations feature lets you invite up to 10 creators to be added as collaborators on a long-form video, a Short or an archived live stream (not an active live stream). Once they accept, each collaborator's name and a subscribe button for their channel appear on the video. YouTube says it aims to recommend the video to the audiences of both the collaborators and the channel that posted it. Revenue stays with the posting channel.

In Studio on a computer, start an upload, open Show more under Audience in the Details section, and click Invite a collaborator under Collaboration.

Choose partners whose customers would genuinely be interested in you, and agree the topic before you film so the video is useful to both audiences rather than an advert for either business.

  • A wedding venue and a local florist film a "table styling on a budget" video together.
  • An accountant and a bookkeeping software trainer answer year-end questions.
  • A gym and a nutritionist film a week of simple meal prep.

How do you promote videos outside YouTube?

New channels get little traffic from YouTube at first, so bring your existing audience with you. Every upload should go to at least three places outside YouTube.

  1. Embed the video on the matching page of your website, such as a service page or FAQ.
  2. Send it to your email list with one sentence on why it's useful.
  3. Share a clip or Short on your other social accounts with a link to the full video.
  4. Add your channel to your Google Business Profile and email signature.
  5. Answer customer questions by sending the video link instead of typing the same reply again.
  6. If you want paid reach, try YouTube's own Promote option on a video that already performs well.
  • Monthly growth check: which three videos got the most impressions, and is their click-through rate holding?
  • Which video kept viewers longest past the opening, and what did that opening do differently?
  • Did every upload have an end screen, a playlist and, for Shorts, a related video?
  • Which outside source (website, email, Business Profile) sent the most viewers?
  • What is the next video in your most-watched playlist, and is it scheduled?

Common questions

How long does it take to grow a business YouTube channel?

There's no fixed timeline. Channels that answer real customer questions on a steady schedule usually see search traffic build over months, not weeks, so plan to keep going for at least six months before judging.

Do I need a lot of subscribers for YouTube to help my business?

No. A small channel can bring in enquiries if its videos answer the questions buyers search for. Subscribers help future videos get seen, but enquiries come from the right viewers.

Why do my videos get impressions but few views?

Your impressions click-through rate is low, which usually means the title or thumbnail doesn't make the video's value clear. Rewrite the title in your customer's words and simplify the thumbnail.

How many people can I add to a YouTube collaboration?

YouTube's Collaborations feature lets you invite up to 10 creators to a long-form video, a Short or an archived live stream.

What should I fix first on a channel that isn't growing?

Start with the videos that get impressions but few clicks, and rewrite their titles and thumbnails. Then look at the intro figure in audience retention and tighten openings where viewers leave early.

Should I pay to promote my YouTube videos?

Only after a video has shown it works on its own. Paid promotion adds reach, but it can't fix a video people don't want to watch.
