How to change your trends location on X (Twitter)

X says trends come from an algorithm and are tailored to you by default, based on who you follow, your interests and your location. It looks for topics that are popular now rather than ones that have been popular for a while. Related hashtags are grouped, so #MondayMotivation and #MotivationMonday can show as one trend. Location trends instead show what's popular with people in one place.

Trends sit under the Explore tab in the apps. On x.com they appear in several places, including the Home timeline, search results and profile pages.

1. Find the Trends box.
2. Click Change.
3. Choose to keep tailored trends based on your location and who you follow, or select Change to pick a nearby location or search for one.

Turn Show content in your current location back on to return to personalised trends. A local shop might set trends to its own city to see what people nearby are talking about this week.

1. Tap your profile icon (on Android, the navigation menu icon if that's what you see).
2. Tap Settings and privacy, then Privacy and safety.
3. Under Your X Activity, tap Content you see.
4. Select Explore settings.
5. Turn off Show content in your current location.
6. Tap Explore locations and type or choose the city or country you want.

X uses followed Topics to personalise your posts, events and ads. Topics you follow are public to anyone who can see your full profile. To stop X using an interest at all, open Your X data, go to Interests from X and deselect it; X says that can take time to take effect.

1. On x.com, go to the More icon and click Topics. In the app, tap Topics in your profile icon menu.
2. Follow suggested Topics with the Follow button, or mark them Not interested.
3. To unfollow, tap or click the button next to a Topic you follow.

• Use the exact word or phrase from the Trends list, including the hashtag if it has one
• Only join trends you have something real to say about. X also filters search for quality
• With so many people posting, your post may not show in the trend's search results, but X says your followers still see it
• X may keep content out of Trends if it breaks the X Rules, contains profanity or adult or graphic references, or targets the privacy of crime victims or minors

• Your city or country isn't listed: X says that means it isn't getting enough posts from there to build a list. Use advanced search to find local posts instead
• Trends still look personalised: check whether you kept tailored trends, or turn off Show content in your current location in the app
• You see news events you didn't ask for: X adds world and local events regardless of personalisation. On x.com, use the menu on a What's happening item and choose Not interested in this
• A Topic keeps appearing after you unfollowed it: X may still recommend posts about it if you like or repost them
