How do you mark your business temporarily closed?

Google says this helps customers who search for you by name understand the closure is only temporary, rather than finding out at your door.

  1. Go to your Business Profile.
  2. Select Edit profile, then Hours.
  3. In the Business hours section, next to Hours, select Edit, then Temporarily closed.
  4. Select Save.
  • For broad searches, temporarily closed businesses can rank after open ones. Google says this depends on the category, the type of search and how many matching businesses are also closed.
  • If Google receives an update that your location is temporarily closed, you may get an email.
  • Seasonal businesses: Google's guidelines say to set regular hours during the season and mark the business temporarily closed in the off-season.

  1. Go to your Business Profile.
  2. Select Edit profile, then Hours.
  3. In the Business hours section, next to Hours, select Edit, then Permanently closed.
  4. Select Save.

How do you reopen?

Don't reopen a profile that was marked permanently closed because of a location or name change. Google says to add a new business instead and verify it; if you want the reviews moved to the new profile, contact Google.

  1. Go to your Business Profile.
  2. Select Edit profile, then Hours.
  3. In the Business hours section, next to Hours, select Edit, then Open with main hours.
  4. Tick each day you're open and set the times with the dropdowns.
  5. Click Save.

What if you've moved, renamed or want the profile gone?

Google treats these differently:

  • Moved: Google's duplicates guidance says to update the address on your existing profile, not create a new one. Its policy overview adds that for businesses whose location is part of the experience, such as dining, lodging or entertainment venues, location edits are rejected, so you mark the old profile permanently closed and create a new one.
  • Renamed: a minor change that keeps the proper nouns, services and category can be edited as a rebrand. Otherwise Google treats it as a new business: mark the old profile closed and create a new one.
  • A new business at your old address: the previous business should be marked permanently closed, not renamed.
  • Leaving the profile: the primary owner can select More, then Business Profile settings, then Remove Business Profile, then Remove profile content and managers. This permanently removes posts, photos and review replies, while customer reviews stay, and the business may still show on Search and Maps.
  • A listing that never existed: anyone signed in can select it on Google Maps, then Suggest an edit, then Place is closed or not here.

Common questions

Does marking a business permanently closed delete the profile?

No. Google says the profile may still appear for people who search for it, and it clearly shows the business is closed.

Will marking my business temporarily closed affect my ranking?

It can. Google says temporarily closed businesses can rank after open ones for broad searches, depending on the category, the search and how many matching businesses are closed.

How long should I be closed before using Temporarily closed?

Google says to use it if you're closed for more than 7 days, for the off-season or indefinitely, and to use special hours for shorter closures.

Can I delete my Google Business Profile?

The primary owner can remove the profile's content and managers from their account. Google says this doesn't guarantee the business won't show on Maps and Search.

I moved my business. Do I need a new profile?

Usually no: Google says to update the address. Dining, lodging and entertainment venues are the exception; they mark the old profile permanently closed and create a new one.
