What makes people swipe through a carousel?

People swipe when the first slide promises something they want and each slide pays off a little of it while hinting at more. They stop when a slide is crowded, confusing or repeats the last one.

Carousels suit content with steps or parts: how-tos, checklists, before-and-afters, product ranges, myths and facts, and short stories. If your point fits in one image, post one image.

  • A specific promise: '5 receipts to keep for your tax return', not 'Tax tips'.
  • Progress: numbered slides, so readers know how far they are.
  • Momentum: each slide ends on a reason to see the next.
  • Consistency: the same layout on every slide, so the content changes and the design doesn't distract.
  • A payoff: the last slide delivers the summary or the action.

How do you plan a carousel before designing it?

Write the carousel before you open a design tool. Changing words in a document is quick; changing them across ten designed slides isn't.

  1. Write the promise in one sentence. That's your cover headline.
  2. List the points that deliver it, one per slide. Cut any that don't.
  3. Decide the ending: a summary slide, a call to action, or both.
  4. Write the words for every slide in a document, a line or two each.
  5. Sketch the layout for each slide: where the headline, image and slide number go.
  6. Count the slides. Use as many as the content needs and no more.
  • If you have more than ten points, split them into two carousels and post them as part one and part two.
Carousel typeSlide patternExample
ListCover, one item per slide, summary5 plants that survive a dark flat
How-toCover, one step per slide, resultHow to clean suede trainers in 4 steps
Myth and factCover, myth then fact on each slide, takeaway3 myths about teeth whitening
Before and afterCover, before, process, after, how to bookA garden makeover in one weekend
Product rangeCover, one product per slide, how to chooseWhich candle scent suits which room
StoryHook, setting, problem, turning point, lessonHow we nearly closed in our first year

How do you design the cover slide?

The cover does most of the work. In the feed it's the only slide people see, so treat it like a headline and a poster at once.

Write three versions of the cover headline and pick the most specific. 'Spring bike checklist' is a label; '5 checks before your first spring ride' is a promise.

  • One headline, a few words, large enough to read without tapping.
  • Say what the reader gets, ideally with a number or a specific result.
  • Use one strong image or a bold colour field, not both fighting each other.
  • Add a small cue to swipe, such as an arrow or 'swipe for the list'.
  • Keep your logo small, or leave it off; it's your account, so people know who posted it.
  • Test it as a thumbnail: shrink it to the size it appears in the feed and check the headline still reads.

What layout, type and colour rules should you follow?

Most carousel design problems come from too much on one slide. These rules keep slides readable on a small screen:

  • Pick one grid and keep margins the same on every slide. Keep text away from the edges, where it can be cropped or covered.
  • Use at most two typefaces: one for headlines, one for body text.
  • Make body text large enough to read on a phone at arm's length. If you have to shrink it to fit, cut words instead.
  • Use strong contrast between text and background: dark on light or light on dark, not mid-grey on a photo.
  • Limit yourself to your brand colours, with one accent colour for the important word or number on each slide.
  • Put slide numbers in the same corner every time.
  • Leave space. A slide with one sentence and lots of space reads faster than a full one.
  • Keep one image style throughout: all photos, all illustrations or all plain colour, not a mix.

How do you write the words on each slide?

Carousel copy is closer to a presentation than a caption. Each slide should make sense at a glance, and the words should make the reader curious about the next slide.

  • One idea per slide, in a headline and at most a short supporting line.
  • Start slide headlines with the useful part: 'Keep fuel receipts' not 'The second type of receipt is'.
  • Use the same sentence shape on every slide of a list, so it's easy to scan.
  • End most slides with a pull to the next: a cliffhanger, a number, or 'the one most people forget is next'.
  • Make the last slide do one job: save this, book now, follow for part two or message a keyword.
  • Use the caption for context the slides can't hold, and repeat the call to action there.
  • Read the slides in order without the caption. If they don't make sense alone, rewrite them; plenty of people swipe without opening the caption.

What are the platform rules for carousels?

Each platform handles multi-image posts differently. From their help centres:

  • On Instagram, design every slide at the same size, because you can't mix orientations in one post.
  • Designing at 1080 pixels wide in a 4:5 or 3:4 portrait shape uses more of the feed than a square.
  • On Instagram, you can't add new photos or videos after you've shared a carousel, though you can reorder or remove them.
PlatformWhat the help centre says
InstagramUp to 20 photos and videos per post; the orientation you choose (square, portrait or landscape) applies to every item
Instagram photosKept at full resolution when 320 to 1080 pixels wide with an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 3:4; other ratios are cropped
Instagram videos in carouselsNot treated as reels, so they don't appear in the Reels tab
LinkedIn documentsPDF, PowerPoint or Word files of 100 MB or less and 300 pages or less
TikTokUp to 35 photos and videos in one editing session, with one sound for the post

What does a finished carousel look like?

Here's a hypothetical seven-slide carousel for a small bike shop, written to the rules above. Add alt text to each image so people using screen readers can follow it; Instagram lets you write your own instead of the automatic description.

  • Notice what it leaves out: no introduction slide, no page of logos, and only one action at the end.
  • The caption can add a line about what the shop's spring service includes and how to book it.

Common questions

How many slides should a carousel have?

As many as the content needs. Instagram allows up to 20 items, but most small-business carousels work well at five to ten slides with one idea each.

What size should carousel slides be?

Design at 1080 pixels wide. Instagram keeps photos between 1.91:1 and 3:4 at full resolution, so a portrait shape such as 4:5 or 3:4 uses more of the screen than a square.

Can I mix photos and videos in a carousel?

Yes, on Instagram and TikTok. On Instagram, videos in a carousel aren't treated as reels.

How do I make a carousel on LinkedIn?

Upload your slides as a document, usually a PDF. LinkedIn accepts files of 100 MB or less and 300 pages or less.

Should the caption repeat what's on the slides?

No. Use the caption for context, a short summary and the call to action, and let the slides carry the content.

What's the best tool for designing carousels?

Any design tool that lets you save a template with your grid, fonts and colours. The template matters more than the tool, because it makes every carousel quicker and consistent.
