Which is cheaper, Buffer or Hootsuite?

Buffer, in almost every small-business case. Its price grows with the number of channels; Hootsuite's grows with the number of people. Some examples at yearly billing:

Two things shift the maths. Hootsuite Standard covers up to 10 accounts, so an 11th means moving every seat to Professional at $199. Buffer gets cheaper per channel above 10: channels 11 to 25 cost $4 each on monthly billing. Hootsuite also offers monthly billing at a higher per-user rate than the yearly prices here, though its plans page doesn't show that rate.

  • 1 person, 3 channels: Buffer Essentials $15 a month; Hootsuite Standard $99 a month.
  • 1 person, 10 channels: Buffer Essentials $50 a month; Hootsuite Standard $99 a month.
  • 3 people, 10 channels, no approvals: Buffer Team $100 a month (all three included); Hootsuite Standard $297 a month.
  • 3 people, 10 channels, with approvals: Buffer Team $100 a month; Hootsuite Advanced $1,197 a month.

Where Buffer is stronger

Buffer is built for publishing with as little setup as possible:

  • A free plan that covers 3 channels for good, with the AI Assistant and 30 days of insights.
  • Low per-channel pricing, falling to $4 a channel above 10 channels on monthly billing.
  • Unlimited team members and approval workflows on Team, so a growing team doesn't multiply the bill.

Free plans and trials

Hootsuite has no free plan. Its 14-day trial needs no credit card and you aren't charged when it ends, but trial accounts can post only 10 to 20 times a day per organisation, depending on plan, and bulk scheduling isn't available during the trial.

Buffer's free plan is permanent: 3 channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time (a slot frees up when a post goes out), 100 ideas and 1 user. Its paid plans have a 14-day trial; if you haven't added payment details by the end, the account drops to Free and channels beyond 3 are locked. That makes a fair side-by-side test cheap: run both trials in the same fortnight with the same posts, then keep the one your team actually used.

Where Zolyp fits (disclosed: it's our product)

Both tools publish posts you've already made. Zolyp, which we make, makes them: it plans the week, writes and designs each post against your Brand Brain, and publishes to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Threads after you approve. It has no social inbox or listening, so Hootsuite is the better pick if those are what you need, and Buffer's free plan is hard to beat if you just need a queue. Lite is $9 a month per brand for scheduling posts you make yourself; the plans that create the posts start at $29 a month, with team members included and a 3-day free trial, no card required.
