What does the LinkedIn Insight Tag do?
It's a small piece of JavaScript that links visits to your website with your LinkedIn ads. Once it's installed you can use:
- Conversion tracking: count visits to a page, or actions such as a form sent, after someone sees or clicks your ad.
- Website audiences: show ads to LinkedIn members who visited your site.
- Website Actions: build conversions and audiences from button clicks, page visits and form submissions without extra code.
- LinkedIn recommends one tag per website. If you have several ad accounts, share the tag between them.
- It loads asynchronously, and LinkedIn says it shouldn't slow your site down.

How do you create the Insight Tag?
You need an ad account first. Then:
- Go to your ad account in Campaign Manager.
- Click Measure in the left menu, then Signals manager.
- Scroll to the Sources catalog section and click Insight Tag. If a recommendation at the top says Create Insight Tag, you can click that instead.
- Each tag gets a unique partner ID that links its data to your ad account.

How do you add the tag to your website yourself?
To paste the code in directly:
- In Signals manager, click Insight Tag, then the I will install the tag myself dropdown. You can also send the tag to a developer from here.
- Copy the code from the window.
- Check the quotation marks are straight, not curly. Some editors change them when you paste.
- Add the code to every page on your domain, ideally just before the closing body tag in your site's global footer.
- Don't change the code. LinkedIn says edited code often causes problems.
- LinkedIn's terms say the tag shouldn't go on pages that collect or contain sensitive data, such as consumer pages for certain medications or pages where people manage bank accounts or medical appointments. LinkedIn suggests checking with your web developer and legal adviser.

How do you add it with Google Tag Manager?
You'll need the partner ID, shown under I will use a tag manager in Signals manager. Then:
- Sign in at tagmanager.google.com and select your account and container.
- In the New Tag box, click Add a new tag.
- Click Tag Configuration, then Discover more tag types in the Community Template Gallery.
- Search for LinkedIn InsightTag 2.0 and click Add to workspace, or Choose template if you've added it before.
- Enter your partner ID in the Partner ID field.
- Add a trigger, ticking All Pages to cover the whole site, and click Add.
- Click Save, then Submit in the upper-right corner to publish the container.
- LinkedIn also supports Adobe, Tealium, Ensighten and Floodlight as tag managers.
- On the older LinkedIn tag in Google Tag Manager? Add InsightTag 2.0, confirm it works, pause the old tag, then publish.

How do you check the tag is working?
Visit a page with the tag on it, because LinkedIn waits for a visit before it checks. Validation can take from a few minutes to 24 hours. Then go to Measure, Signals manager, Insight Tag and read the Status in the Data Connection Information section:
- To check by hand: right-click your page, choose Inspect, open the Network tab and filter for ads.linkedin.com. The status code should be 302.
| Status | Last signal received |
|---|---|
| Active (green) | In the past seven days |
| No recent activity (grey) | More than seven days ago |
| Unverified (red) | Never |

Why does my Insight Tag say Unverified?
If it's still Unverified 24 hours after a visit, work through these:
| Cause | Fix |
|---|---|
| No visits since you installed it | Visit the tagged page yourself and wait up to 24 hours |
| Part of the code is missing | Copy the full code again from Signals manager |
| Curly quotation marks | Replace them with straight quotes |
| The code was edited | Paste it exactly as Campaign Manager gives it |
| Wrong partner ID | Match the number after _linkedin_data_partner_id to your ad account's tag |
| LinkedIn domains blocked | Unblock domains such as snap.licdn.com and px.ads.linkedin.com |

Where Zolyp fits
Zolyp, which publishes this guide, is our own product, so weigh this section with that in mind. Zolyp doesn't add tracking code to your website. For the organic LinkedIn posts it writes and schedules, our free UTM builder can tag the links you share, so your own website analytics show which posts sent visitors. LinkedIn is one of the 9 platforms it publishes to (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Threads), and you approve the week before anything goes live. Plans that create the posts start at $29 a month, with a 3-day free trial.
Common questions
Will the LinkedIn Insight Tag slow down my website?
LinkedIn says it shouldn't. The tag loads asynchronously and uses compression.
Can I see which LinkedIn members visited my website?
No. LinkedIn says it only gives you reports and audiences that don't identify individual members.
What data does the Insight Tag collect?
The page URL, referrer, IP address, device and browser details and a timestamp. LinkedIn removes direct identifiers within seven days and deletes the rest within 180 days.
How long does the Insight Tag take to verify?
From a few minutes to 24 hours after someone visits a tagged page.
Do I need a separate Insight Tag for each ad account?
No. LinkedIn recommends one tag per website, shared across your ad accounts.
