Instagram vs Facebook at a glance
The figures below come from Meta and Pew Research Center, the same sources as our Instagram and Facebook statistics pages. User counts, surveys and ad reach measure different things, so compare each row across, not down.

Who uses Instagram and who uses Facebook?
Facebook is the broader network. In Pew's 2025 survey a majority of every US adult age group used it: 68% of 18 to 29 year olds, 80% of 30 to 49 year olds, 74% of 50 to 64 year olds and 57% of those 65 and over. Across 37 countries surveyed in spring 2026, the median was 69%, the highest of the five platforms Pew asked about.
Instagram is younger. It reaches 80% of US adults aged 18 to 29 and 62% of 30 to 49 year olds, then drops to 40% of 50 to 64 year olds and 19% of those 65 and over. More women than men use both apps, and the gap is wider on Facebook.
In the UK the two are closer than in the US: Pew found 58% of adults use Facebook and 52% use Instagram.

What is each app good at?
The two apps reward different kinds of posts. A rough guide, based on what Meta and survey data say people go there for:
- Instagram: visual discovery. Photos, carousels and reels of your products, work and team. Meta says US Reels watch time grew more than 30% year on year in late 2025, and Instagram recommends posts to people who don't follow you yet, in Explore, Reels and Feed.
- Instagram keeps links on your profile rather than in posts: you can add up to five websites to your profile from Edit profile, then Links.
- Facebook: community and local reach. In GWI's survey, more than 7 in 10 Facebook users say they go there to stay in touch with friends and family, so posts that feel local and personal fit in. Pew also found 38% of US adults regularly get news on Facebook, more than any other platform.
- Facebook video is growing too: Meta reported 9% year-on-year growth in video time on Facebook in the second quarter of 2026.

Which should your business prioritise?
Start from your customers, not the app. If you're not sure who they are, look at your last 20 sales or enquiries and note their rough age and where they found you.
- Most customers over 45, or you're a local service (trades, clinics, home services): lead with Facebook.
- Most customers under 35, or what you sell looks good on camera (food, fashion, beauty, fitness, design): lead with Instagram.
- A mix of both: post the same core content to both and decide which one gets your extra effort, such as replies and video, after a month of results.
- Only time for one: pick the one where your customers already message you. That's where the conversations, and the sales, are.
How do you post to both at once?
You don't need to make everything twice. Meta Business Suite, Meta's free tool, can create and schedule one post to your Facebook Page and Instagram account together:
- Go to Meta Business Suite and click Create post.
- Under Post to, select both your Facebook Page and your Instagram account.
- Add your photos under Media. Meta notes a limit of 10 photos for Instagram.
- Under Post details, write the text. You can customise it separately for Facebook and Instagram.
- Under Scheduling options, pick a date and time, then click Schedule.

Can you share Instagram posts to Facebook automatically?
Yes. If your Instagram account is a professional account connected to a Facebook Page you fully control, you can tick Also share on while creating a post or reel, or turn on automatic crossposting for future posts, stories and reels in the Crossposting settings in your Instagram profile menu.
Two things to check when one post serves both apps. Reels can be between 1.91:1 and 9:16, and Instagram won't recommend reels longer than 3 minutes to new audiences. And write the caption for the reader: an Instagram caption that ends in a pile of hashtags reads oddly on Facebook, so use the custom text option when it matters.

Is advertising different on each?
Not much. Instagram and Facebook ads are bought through the same Meta tools, and Meta Business Suite can boost a post or reel. What differs is who you'll reach, so the audience figures above apply to ads too.
Budget for rising prices: Meta reported that the average price per ad across its apps rose 12% year on year in the second quarter of 2026, while ad impressions rose 14%. Strong free posts make a small ad budget go further. Our guide to organic vs paid social media covers when to pay.

Where Zolyp fits (disclosed: it's our product)
Running two Meta accounts well is mostly a writing problem: the same news needs a different caption on each. Zolyp, which we make, plans the week, writes and designs each post against your Brand Brain, fits it to each platform and publishes to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Threads, after you approve it. Lite is $9 a month per brand for scheduling posts you make yourself; the plans that create the posts start at $29 a month, with team members included and a 3-day free trial, no card required. If you already make your own posts, Meta Business Suite does the cross-posting part for free.
Common questions
Is Instagram or Facebook better for a small business?
It depends on your customers. Facebook reaches more adults and more older adults; Instagram reaches more under-30s. Many small businesses post to both from Meta Business Suite and put their extra effort where customers respond.
Is Facebook still worth it for business in 2026?
For most local and older-skewing audiences, yes. Meta says Facebook has had more than 2 billion daily active users for a while, and Pew found 70% of US adults use it, including 57% of those 65 and over.
Which has more users, Instagram or Facebook?
Both are huge. Meta says Instagram has more than 3 billion monthly active users and 2 billion daily users, and Facebook more than 2 billion daily users. In surveys, more adults say they use Facebook.
Should I post the same thing on Instagram and Facebook?
The same photo or video is fine. Adjust the words: Meta Business Suite lets you customise the text for each app, and Instagram keeps links on your profile rather than in the caption.
Can I manage Instagram and Facebook from one place?
Yes. Meta Business Suite is free and lets you create, schedule and boost posts for a Facebook Page and an Instagram account together.
