Are Instagram ads and Facebook ads the same thing?
Almost. Meta sells ads across its apps from one system. When you create a campaign in Meta Ads Manager, the objective you choose decides where the ads can appear: Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, Threads and Meta Audience Network. Each of those spots is a placement.
So you don't really choose between an Instagram ad and a Facebook ad. You create one ad and choose its placements. By default, Meta selects Advantage+ placements, which lets its delivery system put the ad wherever it expects the best results for your budget. Meta says adding placements doesn't increase the cost of your ad.

What placements does each app offer?
Meta groups placements by how people see them. The Instagram and Facebook ones, as listed in its help centre:
- Instagram Feed: the home feed in the app and on the web.
- Instagram profile feed: within the feed view of public profiles of people 18 and over.
- Instagram Explore home: as a tile in the Explore grid.
- Instagram Stories and Reels: full-screen, between Stories and in the Reels tab.
- Instagram search results: when people search by keyword in the app.
- Facebook Feed: on desktop and mobile. Meta says from March 2026 it includes the Friends tab.
- Facebook Marketplace, right column (desktop only), notifications and Business Explore.
- Facebook Stories, Reels and in-stream reels, plus search results next to Facebook and Marketplace searches.

How do you run ads on Instagram only, or Facebook only?
Switch to manual placements. Meta's steps for the Awareness, Traffic or Engagement objectives:
- Go to Meta Ads Manager and click + Create.
- Select Awareness, Traffic or Engagement and click Continue.
- Work through the steps until you reach the Placements section of the ad set.
- Advantage+ placements is selected by default. Hover over it, click Edit and select Manual placements.
- Under Platforms, untick Facebook or Instagram, then untick any individual placements you don't want.
- Complete the rest of the ad and click Publish.
- For Leads, App promotion or Sales, click Show more settings in Placements instead; excluding a placement turns Advantage+ off.
- For Traffic or Engagement, Allow limited spend to excluded placements lets up to 5% of the budget go to each excluded placement when Meta expects it to help.
- You don't need an Instagram account to choose the Instagram placement: Meta says your Facebook Page can serve as the voice of the ad.

Should you choose one app or let Meta decide?
Meta recommends Advantage+ placements because more placements give its system more chances to find cheap results. For most small advertisers that's a sensible default, as long as the creative works everywhere it might appear.
Choose manually when the audience or the format clearly favours one app: a vertical video made for Reels, a local service aimed at older customers, or an offer that only makes sense to people over a certain age. Whichever you choose, check results by placement after a week and compare cost per result rather than cost per click.
Budget for rising prices. Meta reported that the average price per ad across its apps rose 12% year on year in the second quarter of 2026, while ad impressions rose 14%.

Who will you reach on each app?
Facebook reaches more adults overall: Pew found 70% of US adults use it, against 51% for Instagram. Instagram is younger, reaching 80% of US adults aged 18 to 29, while 57% of those 65 and over use Facebook against 19% on Instagram.
In Meta's own advertising tools, DataReportal reported an ad reach of 2.39 billion for Facebook and 1.99 billion for Instagram in April 2026. Ad reach counts accounts, not people, so treat it as a rough size guide.

Boosting a post vs using Ads Manager
Boosting is the quick route. You pick a post or reel you've already published and pay to show it to more people; Meta says boosting a post from your Facebook Page creates a Facebook ad, and Instagram reels can be boosted from the app. You choose an audience, a duration and a daily budget.
Ads Manager is the full route: more objectives, manual placements, separate creative per placement and detailed reporting. Meta notes that ads created by boosting a post from a Facebook Page or Instagram profile are opted in to multi-advertiser ads by default, which you can turn off in Ads Manager.

Where Zolyp fits (disclosed: it's our product)
Zolyp, which we make, doesn't run or manage ads; use Meta Ads Manager for that. It handles the organic posts that give an ad something to stand on: it plans the week, writes and designs each post against your Brand Brain and publishes to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Threads after you approve. Posts that do well organically are often the best ones to boost. Lite is $9 a month per brand for scheduling posts you make yourself; the plans that create the posts start at $29 a month, with team members included and a 3-day free trial, no card required.
Common questions
Are Instagram ads cheaper than Facebook ads?
There's no fixed answer: costs vary by audience, objective, placement and time of year. Run the same ad on both with Advantage+ placements, then compare cost per result by placement.
Do I need an Instagram account to run Instagram ads?
No. Meta says you don't need to set up an Instagram account for your business to select the Instagram placement: your Facebook Page can serve as the voice of your ad on Instagram.
Can I run one ad on both Instagram and Facebook?
Yes. That's the default: Advantage+ placements lets Meta show one ad across Facebook, Instagram and its other apps, and Meta says adding placements doesn't increase the cost.
How do I show my ad only on Instagram?
In Ads Manager, edit the ad set's Placements, choose Manual placements and untick Facebook under Platforms. For Leads or Sales objectives, use Show more settings.
Is boosting a post the same as running an ad?
Boosting creates an ad from a post you've already published, with simpler options. Ads Manager gives you more objectives, placement control and reporting.
