What are personalised ads on X?

X works with ad partners to show interest-based ads. Its help page gives the example of a flower shop that shares hashed email addresses from its mailing list, which X matches to hashed emails on accounts so the shop's Promoted post reaches its subscribers. X may also collect information through pixels on a business's website so the business can reach those visitors on X.

The same tools are what you'd use if you advertise on X yourself, so it helps to know how they look from the user's side.

How do you turn off personalised ads on X?

In the X app, the wider controls live under your profile photo, Settings and privacy, Privacy and safety, then Personalization and data. On the web, the Personalization and data page works both logged in and logged out, and X says one master setting at the top switches off all of these features at once.

  1. Log in. X says changes made while logged out only affect that browser while you're logged out.
  2. Open Settings and privacy, then Privacy and safety.
  3. Go to Ads preferences. X's Topics help page places Ad preferences in the Data sharing and off-X activity section.
  4. Switch off Personalized ads.

Which other settings affect the ads you see?

  • Personalize based on your inferred identity: stops X linking you to other browsers, devices, or emails and phone numbers similar to yours
  • Allow additional information sharing with business partners: stops X sharing certain non-public data (such as IP address and device advertising IDs) with ad platforms that serve ads on X. Users in the EU, EFTA states and UK get extra coverage, and X says changes may not be immediate
  • Interests from X: in Your X data, deselect interests you don't want used
  • On iPhone (iOS 14 and later): turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track in your phone's settings
  • On Android: turn on Opt out of Ads Personalization in your phone's settings
  • On the web: the Digital Advertising Alliance tool at optout.aboutads.info opts that browser out of X's interest-based ads

What ads will you still see on X?

Opting out doesn't remove ads. X says you may still see ads based on what you gave at signup and on how you use X, including what you post, who you follow, your phone type, where you are and the links you click. Ads that other companies serve, including Google ads marketing X itself, follow those companies' own settings.

  • Dismiss a Promoted post you don't want to see again
  • Block the advertiser to stop its Promoted posts appearing in your timeline
  • Report an ad through X's ads report form if it breaks X's policies

Why are you still seeing personalised ads?

  • You changed the setting while logged out, so it only applied to that browser
  • The change hasn't taken effect yet: X says partner-sharing and interest changes can take time
  • The ad is based on your activity on X itself, which the opt-out doesn't cover
  • The ad was served by another company, such as Google, which X's settings don't control
  • Your phone's own ad tracking setting is still on

Common questions

Can I turn off ads on X completely?

X's help pages don't offer that. Turning off Personalized ads stops some targeting, but X says you'll still see ads.

Where is Personalization and data on the X app?

Tap your profile photo, then Settings and privacy, Privacy and safety, and Personalization and data.

Does turning off personalised ads apply to all my devices?

If you change it while logged in, X says it applies wherever you're logged in to that account. Logged-out changes only affect that browser.

Does X share my data with Google?

X lists Google as an ad platform it shares some non-public data with, such as IP addresses and device IDs, unless you turn off additional information sharing with business partners.

How do I stop seeing a specific advertiser?

Block the advertiser's account. X says that stops its Promoted posts appearing in your timeline.
