What kit do you actually need?

Viewers forgive slightly soft video far more readily than bad sound. If you buy one thing, buy a microphone. Everything else can start with what you have.

Recent phones film at a quality that is more than good enough for YouTube, so spending on a new phone is rarely the best first step. Spend on the things around it instead, and only once you know you'll keep filming.

Which phone settings should you check first?

Two minutes of set-up before every filming session avoids the most common problems. YouTube's own upload guidance asks for video to be encoded and uploaded at the same frame rate it was recorded, so pick a frame rate and stick with it for the whole video.

  1. Set the camera's resolution and frame rate once (for example 1080p or 4K at 30 frames per second) and use the same setting for every clip in the video.
  2. Clean the lens with a soft cloth.
  3. Turn on Do Not Disturb so calls and notifications don't interrupt a take.
  4. Lock focus and exposure on your face or the product, if your camera app allows it.
  5. Check you have enough storage and battery for the session.
  6. Use the back camera for the best quality, with a second person or a screen to check framing if you can.

Should you film horizontally or vertically?

Decide before you film, because it changes how YouTube treats the video. The standard aspect ratio for YouTube on computers is 16:9 (horizontal). A square or vertical upload of up to three minutes counts as a Short, and YouTube says to use a wider aspect ratio such as 16:9 if you want to keep a video out of Shorts.

You're makingHold the phoneWhy
A long how-to or walkthroughHorizontal (16:9)Fills computer and TV screens; stays a long-form video
A ShortVerticalFills a phone screen; counts as a Short if three minutes or less

How do you get good sound and light?

Sound and light do more for quality than any phone upgrade. Both are mostly about where you stand.

  • Pick a quiet room with soft things in it (curtains, sofa, rug). Bare walls and tiled floors echo.
  • Clip the microphone about a hand's width below your chin, and keep the cable out of shot.
  • Turn off fans, music and anything that hums. Close windows on busy roads.
  • Face the light source. A window in front of you gives soft, even light; one behind you turns you into a silhouette.
  • Avoid overhead lights alone, which cast shadows under the eyes. Add a lamp to one side if needed.
  • Record ten seconds of test footage and listen back with headphones before the real take.
  • Film at the same time of day for a series, so the light matches from video to video.
  • Outdoors, film in open shade rather than direct sun, and use a foam or fur windshield on the microphone.

How do you film a business video on a phone?

Work from your script or outline, and film in short takes rather than one long one. Short takes are easier to redo and easier to edit.

  1. Mount the phone at eye level, with your eyes about a third of the way down the frame.
  2. Look at the lens, not at the screen.
  3. Film one section of your script at a time. If you stumble, pause, then start the sentence again.
  4. Film the extra shots your script calls for: close-ups, the product in use, before and after, the finished job.
  5. Film a few vertical versions of the best moments for Shorts.
  6. Before you pack up, play back one clip to check sound and focus.
  • Film a little before and after each take, so you have room to trim.
  • Hold each extra shot for at least five seconds; short flashes are hard to use.
  • Move the camera slowly or not at all. Smooth, simple shots look better than shaky movement.
  • If you show a screen, record it with the phone's screen recorder rather than filming it with the camera.
  • Back up the footage to a computer or cloud storage the same day.

Can you edit on the phone?

For Shorts, the YouTube app has its own camera. Tap Create, then Short, and tap or hold to record; you can record several clips, then add music, filters, text and effects. Undo removes the last clip and Redo restores it. Tap Done to preview, then Next to add a title of up to 100 characters before you upload or save a draft.

For long videos, use your phone's built-in editor or any editing app to trim the start and end, cut mistakes and add on-screen text. Keep the export at the same frame rate you filmed in. Simple is fine: a clean cut with clear sound beats heavy effects.

How do you upload from your phone?

You can upload straight from the YouTube app. If you close the upload before finishing, it's saved as a draft on your Content page.

  1. Open the YouTube app and tap Create, then Video.
  2. Select the file and tap Next.
  3. Add a title (up to 100 characters), description, privacy and audience settings.
  4. Finish the details and upload.
  5. To save mobile data, set uploads to Wi-Fi only: tap your profile picture, then Settings, General and Uploads.
  • By default you can upload videos up to 15 minutes long. Verify your account (by text message or voice call) to upload longer ones.
  • The maximum file size is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less.
  • Add chapters, end screens and a custom thumbnail afterwards in YouTube Studio, which is easier on a computer.

Common questions

Can I make professional YouTube videos with just a phone?

Yes, for most business videos. Clear sound, even light and a steady shot matter far more than the camera. A clip-on microphone and a tripod make the biggest difference.

Should I film YouTube videos horizontally or vertically?

Horizontally (16:9) for long videos, and vertically for Shorts. A square or vertical video of up to three minutes counts as a Short.

What frame rate should I use?

Pick one, such as 30 frames per second, and keep it for the whole video. YouTube asks for video to be uploaded at the same frame rate it was recorded.

Why can't I upload a video longer than 15 minutes from my phone?

Longer uploads need a verified account. Start the upload and follow the prompts to verify by text message or voice call.

What is the best microphone for filming on a phone?

A clip-on (lavalier) or small wireless microphone that connects to your phone is the most useful first purchase for talking-to-camera videos. Choose one that works with your phone's port or connection.

Can I edit YouTube videos in the YouTube app?

The Shorts camera lets you record clips and add music, text and effects to Shorts. For long videos, edit in your phone's editor or another app before uploading.
