How do you inspect a page?

The page must belong to the Search Console property you have open.

  1. Open Search Console and choose the right property.
  2. Paste the page's full URL into the inspection bar at the top of the screen and press Enter.
  3. Read the overall status at the top of the result.
  4. Open the Page indexing section for details, such as whether crawling and indexing are allowed.
  • You can also select the inspect icon next to a URL in most reports, or open URL Inspection from the menu.

How do you request indexing?

Do this for a new page or one you've changed. You must be an owner or full user of the property.

  1. Inspect the page URL.
  2. Select Test live URL to check Google can fetch and index the current version.
  3. If the live test shows the page can be indexed, select Request indexing.
  • Google limits how many requests you can make each day, but doesn't publish the number.
  • Requesting the same URL again won't get it crawled any faster.
  • Google's pages give different timings: the URL Inspection help says indexing can take up to a week or two, and the Search Central recrawl guide says crawling can take a few days to a few weeks.
  • For many new or updated pages at once, Google recommends submitting a sitemap instead.

Why isn't your page on Google?

The Page indexing section usually gives the reason:

  • Crawl allowed? No: a robots.txt rule blocks Google. Remove the rule if you want the page found.
  • Indexing allowed? No: a noindex tag or header blocks indexing. Remove it if you want the page in Search.
  • URL is unknown to Google: Google hasn't found it yet. Add it to your sitemap or request indexing.
  • Discovered or Crawled, currently not indexed: Google knows about the page but hasn't indexed it.
  • Duplicate or alternate page: Google chose another URL as the main version.
  • Manual actions, security issues and temporary removals can also keep a page out, and the URL Inspection tool doesn't check these.

How do you check a fix worked?

Run Test live URL again after making a change. Google notes the live test can't check everything: for example, which URL it treats as the main version is only decided at indexing time.

Common questions

How do I know if Google has indexed my page?

Inspect it in Search Console's URL Inspection tool. URL is on Google means it's indexed and eligible to appear.

How long does Google take to index a page after I request it?

Google's help says it can take up to a week or two; its Search Central guide says crawling can take a few days to a few weeks.

Does requesting indexing guarantee my page appears on Google?

No. Google says a request doesn't guarantee the page will be indexed.

Is there a limit on indexing requests?

Yes. There's a daily quota per property, but Google doesn't publish the figure.

Why is the Request indexing button not working?

You can't request indexing if the live test shows the page can't be indexed, or if you're a restricted user rather than an owner or full user.
