What is FOMO?
Also called fear of missing out.
FOMO stands for fear of missing out: the worry that other people are enjoying something you are not. In marketing, it describes posts that use real deadlines, limited stock or exclusive access to encourage people to act now.
Why it matters
People act faster when they know a chance won't last. Telling followers honestly that a class has three places left or a batch sells out by noon helps them decide, and it rewards the followers who pay attention. It also gives people a reason to turn on notifications or check your Stories, because that is where they hear first.
Example
A pottery studio posts on Monday: "Saturday's wheel-throwing class has 3 places left. Booking closes Thursday at 6 p.m." By Thursday it posts a Story showing the class is full and opens a waiting list for next month.
How businesses use FOMO honestly
FOMO marketing works when the scarcity is real and clearly explained. Followers learn that when you say something is limited, you mean it.
- Real deadlines: early-bird prices, last order dates for Christmas delivery, booking cut-offs.
- Real limits: small-batch products, numbered editions, seats at an event.
- Followers-first access: an offer or preview shared on social media a day before it goes anywhere else.
- Live proof: a Story showing the queue at opening or the shelf emptying, filmed on the day.
When not to use it
Don't invent urgency. Fake countdown timers, made-up stock levels or a "last chance" sale that comes back every week can mislead customers and may break consumer protection rules in many countries. Even when it's legal, people notice, and they stop believing your deadlines.
Go easy on FOMO for big or worrying purchases, such as health, finance or children's products. Pressure there feels pushy. Clear information and time to decide build more trust. If an offer is genuinely open all year, say so; that is a selling point too.
Honest FOMO captions
The honest version of FOMO gives facts: what is limited, by how much, and until when. For example:
- "We bake 40 cinnamon buns on Saturdays. When they're gone, they're gone."
- "Early-bird price ends Sunday at midnight. After that it's the full price."
- "Followers get first pick: the new range goes live here at 9 a.m., on the website at noon."
- "Last orders for Christmas delivery: Friday 18 December. Anything after that ships in the new year."
Common questions
Is FOMO marketing manipulative?
It can be when the scarcity is fake. Telling people about a real deadline or a real limit is simply useful information. The line is crossed when you invent pressure that doesn't exist.
What does FOMO mean in a text or caption?
It means fear of missing out. "Major FOMO" under a friend's holiday photo means "I wish I was there".
What is JOMO?
JOMO means the joy of missing out: being happy to skip something and stay home. Some businesses play on it too, for example a candle shop or a takeaway celebrating a quiet night in.
